Thiago Monteiro v Tennys Sandgren Head to Head

They have never played against each other at the tour level, but met once at a lower-level match in 2015, with Monteiro winning the clay-court contest in three.

Monteiro Will Have to Adapt to Hard Courts Quickly

Since his first round defeat to Dan Evans at the U.S. Open, Monteiro has played four Challenger tournaments, all on clay, winning the title in Braga, Portugal two weeks ago.

The lefty, who began the season with a terrific run to the semifinals of Melbourne-1, also reached the quarterfinals in Cordoba, but lost his way following the last eight finish in the clay court event, as he has been 5-11 since then.

Overall, Monteiro, who has clearly found playing on clay more comfortable than on hard surfaces, has a better record on the latter this year. Of the 13-15 overall record this season, the Brazilian has a winning, 8-6 record on hard courts, a huge improvement considering he was 6-25 on the surface before the start of the year.

Can Monteiro start with a win in a tournament where he has played just once before, falling in the first round in 2017?

Sandgren Will Be Desperate to Regain Form

He is 7-15 this season and hasn’t won a main draw match since beating James Duckworth in the first round in Washington.

Tennys Sandgren is 3-8 on hard courts this year and most recently was part of the Columbus Challenger last month, winning the first two rounds before falling to J.J.Wolf in the quarterfinals.

The 30-year-old, who won his only ATP title in Auckland two years ago, will be desperately looking for a change of fortunes.

With two quarterfinal appearances at the Australian Open in 2018 and 2020, Sandgren had seen a rise in his rankings, but a dip in form and his inability to win consecutive matches on regular  basis have resulted in him falling out of the top 100 and things will only become difficult from here on.

This will be Sandgren’s third main draw appearance at Indian Wells. He reached the second round in 2018 and lost in the opening round the following year.

Monteiro v Sandgren Prediction and Tip

Monteiro has been very good on hard courts this year, but has been playing a lot on clay of late, so he will have to adjust to the surface quickly. Sandgren’s record hasn’t been good this year, but he will fancy his chances against the Brazilian. Expect a good contest, with Sandgren edging past the Brazilian.
