Elise Mertens v Jasmine Paolini Head to Head

Mertens leads Paolini 2-0. The Belgian beat the Italian at the Fed Cup in 2018 and then she won their next contest as well in Prague last year .

Mertens brings a 32-18 season record to Indian Wells, where she will be appearing in the main draw for the third time.

Th 25-year-old Belgian is 6-4 from her last 10 matches and that includes a run to the fourth round of the US Open and a quarterfinal finish in Luxembourg. Most recently, Mertens featured at the Chicago Fall Classic last week, where she received a first-round bye before defeating Dayana Yastremska in the second round, but she eventually feel to Danielle Collins i the Round of 16.

An equally good player on hard as well as clay surfaces, Mertens is 20-9 on hard courts this year. She is a winner of six WTA titles, and won her only title of the season at the Gippsland Trophy, defeating Kaia Kanepi in the final.

Among other notable performances this season, the World No. 18 was a runner-up in Istanbul and semifinalist in Dubai and San Jose. Having not been able to win two consecutive matches in her last two tournaments, she will be hoping to start well at Indian Wells and make a deep run in the tournament.

Paolini Knocks Out Hontama

Lucky loser Jasmine Paolini moved into the second round of the tournament with a three-set win over gritty Japanese player Mai Hontama.

Paolini begalled the Japanese in the first set, but was broken twice in the second as Hontama forged her way back into the contest, forcing the third set. The feisty Italian regrouped and came back stronger in the third, breaking Hontama twice and taking the match 6-0, 3-6, 6-2.

Paolini had lost her second qualifying round to Ukraine’s Kateryna Kozlova 1-6, 3-6 on Tuesday. However, the Italian still made it to the main draw as a lucky loser. She had won her first qualifying round against Russia’s Natalia Vikhlyantseva 6-1, 6-4 on Monday.

The World No. 63 has touched new heights this season bringing in a 26-20 season record to the tournament. Her biggest accomplishment this season was her run to a maiden title in Portoroz, Slovenia last month.

Paolini also reached two WTA 125K finals this season, winning the title in Bol and finishing runner-up in Saint Malo.

Mertens v Paolini Prediction and Tip

The more experienced Mertens will definitely start the favourite but she will be wary of Paolini’s current form and newfound confidence. Expect a cracking contest with Mertens eventually advancing.
