Victoria Azarenka v Magda Linette Head to Head

In their one and only meeting on the WTA Tour (2016 Miami Open), Azarenka defeated Linette in the round of 32 6-3, 6-0 to win the match and eventually, win the trophy.

Azarenka Seeking her First Title of the Season

32-year-old Victoria Azarenka returned to form last year when she won the Cincinnati Open – her first title in four years – and followed it with runner-up feats in the US Open and Ostrava Open.

This season, things haven’t been that smooth for the Belarusian, as evident from the fact that she fell from the #13 position in the rankings to #32 over the year. But that isn’t to say it’s been a horrible year – her win-loss tally stands at an impressive 23-8.

Azarenka has had deep runs in many tournaments – she was a semifinalist in the Bett1Open and Qatar Open, and a quarterfinalist in the Grampians Trophy, Canadian Open, and Bad Homburg Open. Most recently, the former World No. 1 also reached the third round in the Chicago Open but withdrew from that game. It is worth noting that it was the fifth instance this season that she withdrew from a match on the tour.

As a two-time champion at Indian Wells, Azarenka will fancy her chances of another deep run but the number 27 seed finds herself in a precarious bracket with the likes of Petra Kvitova, Simona Halep, and Emma Raducanu.

Linette Moves Past Peterson

Magda Linette defeated Rebecca Peterson of Sweden 3-6, 6-3, 6-2 to reach the second round in the Indian Wells Open. Now, she will look to upset Azarenka and post her best results in the tournament.

It is certainly easier said than done, given that World No. 54 has had a rather muted season in 2021. But the Pole has had her moments on the court which make her a threat to consider.

In the Strasbourg Open and French Open, Linette reached the semis and third round respectively – in the latter, she moved past Ashleigh Barty after the Aussie retired at 1-6, 2-2. She delivered a similar run at the Wimbledon – this time by upsetting Elina Svitolina in the second round. However, she fell to Paula Badosa immediately thereafter.

In more recent weeks, she had the fortune of reaching the semis in WTA Cleveland. There she beat the top seed Daria Kasatkina in straight sets to reach the final two. Her last stint before coming to California was in Chicago where she lost to Jil Teichmann in round two.

Azarenka v Linette Prediction and Tip

Azarenka has form and experience on her side, making her an obvious favourite in this match. It may not be an easy win for her, seeing that Linette has shown a tendency to surprise in the past. All in all, we are in for an intriguing game of tennis.
