Denis Kudla v Alejandro Tabilo Head to Head

95th-ranked Denis Kudla will play 184th-ranked Alejandro Tabilo for the first time on Friday.

Kudla Re-enters Top 100

Denis Kudla’s successful bid to re-enter the world’s top 100 has brought with it an automatic main draw spot at the Indian Wells Masters.

The 29-year-old who has compiled a 9-11 record for the season at tour level is ranked 95th in the world. His ranking received a major boost by reaching the quarterfinals of Washington, and the semifinal of the Cary Challenger.

Kudla entered the San Diego Open as a lucky loser last week, but was outclassed by former World No. 1 Andy Murray in his opening-round match. That was his 108th loss from 169 tour-level matches, translating to 36% winning rate.

However, the American’s record on the Challenger tour eclipses his ATP struggles. He has won seven challenger titles and has a 63% winning rate (won 192 from 313 matches).

Kudla’s most productive part of the season was on grass courts. He finished runner-up at the Nottingham Challenger, and also made the third round of Wimbledon as a qualifier.

Tabilo Impresses In Qualifying

Alejandro Tabilo was in top form in his two qualifying matches. The Canadian-born Chilean eased past Michael Mmoh 6-3 6-4, and then Evgeny Donskoy 6-2 6-1 to reach the Indian Wells main draw at the first time of asking.

Tabilo will also be making his second appearance in a Masters 1000 main draw, having successfully scaled the qualifying rounds of the Miami Masters earlier this season before losing to Mikael Ymer in the first round.

In as much as many players from South America love the dirt, it is pertinent to note Tabilo has the game to make a whirlwind impact on faster surfaces. The 24-year-old stands at six feet tall and possesses a humungous first serve. He also hits deep, flat groundstrokes off either wing.

The Chilean gave a thorough demonstration of just how varied and precise his serve was in dismissing Mmoh and Donskoy. He faced a grand total of five break points against the pair and did not concede any of them.

Kudla v Tabilo Prediction and Tip

This is a tough one to call especially given Kudla’s unpredictability. The American tends to blow hot and cold at different tournaments. Another slow start in this one could result in another early exit. If Tabilo’s form in qualifying is anything to go by, he looks a solid pick to advance.
