Maria Sakkari v Viktorija Golubic Head to Head

The two have never met previously.

In-form Sakkari Looking for First Title of the Season

She ended the semifinal jinx in Ostrava last month, overpowering Iga Swiatek to reach her first final of the season, but couldn’t add to her only career title that she won in Rabat in 2019 as she went down to Annett Kontaveit in the title clash.

But the way Maria Sakkari has been playing this year, it seems only a matter of time before she claims her second WTA title. Could it be at Indian Wells? The sixth seed is surely one of the contenders.

Although titleless, this definitely has been the best season for the Greek so far. She reached a third WTA 1000 semifinal in Miami, then made her final four debut at a Grand Slam at the French Open and followed it up with a second semifinal appearance at a major at the U.S. Open.

Her accomplishments this season also propelled her in the rankings, allowing her to break into the top 10 for the first time in her career. To top it all she also defeated seven top 10 players this year.

The 26-year-old aggressive, all-court player also made it to the semifinals in Abu Dhabi and the Grampians Trophy, thus reaching the last four stage or better on hard courts five times this year. She has a 24-11 record on the surface and it’s only going to get better.

Sakkari is 8-2 from her last 10 matches, with the two defeats coming against Emma Raducanu at the U.S. Open semifinal and Kontaveit at the Ostrava Open final.

Golubic Overcomes Vondrousova

World No. 46 Viktorija Golubic ended a three-match losing streak with a first round win over  Olympic silver medallist Marketa Vondrousova.

Golubic, who went completely out of form ever since reaching her maiden major quarterfinal at the Wimbledon, needed an hour and 52 minutes to beat the Czech player 6-1, 4-6, 6-3.

This was the Swiss player’s third win in her last 10 matches and signs that things are turning again for the 28-year-old, who was very impressive in the first half of the year.

Golubic brought a 45-19 season record (from all levels) to Indian Wells, which saw her finish runner-up in Lyon and Monterrey and win a WTA 125K title in Saint Mal. There was also an ITF title to go along with her other accomplishments this season.

The Swiss has also made massive gains in the rankings, breaking into the top 100 for the first time in her career and then constantly moving up the ladder.

On Thursday, Golubic broke her opponent eight times in the match, while saving two of the seven break points that she faced. She outplayed Vondrousova in the first set with four breaks of serve against one, but was outlasted in the second. Golubic stuttered early in the third, with the Czech taking a 0-2 lead, but she soon took charge of the set and advanced to the next round.

Sakkari v Golubic Prediction and Tip

Given the recent form of the two players, Sakkari definitely is the favourite. The Swiss will give her opponent a tough fight but expect the Greek to eventually win and reach the third round.
