Daniil Medvedev v Mackenzie McDonald Head to Head
Medvedev holds an absolute 4-0 lead over his American adversary, beating him twice in 2021 in straight sets.
The first one was in the Australian Open while the second one came as recently as the Cincinnati Masters.

World No. 2 Daniil Medvedev’s win-loss tally for the year stands at 48-10. In his last four tournaments – including the Laver Cup – the Russian is 16-1.
He has had a fabulous time in the US Open swing, winning the Canadian Masters and the New York major (in the latter, he defeated Novak Djokovic in the final with 6-4, 6-4, 6-4). With that win, he also avenged his loss to the World No. 1 in the Australian Open final earlier in the season.
Firing on all cylinders, the 25-year-old will look to extend this winning run and dominance across the Indian Wells Open too. Interestingly, this happens to be one of the two big hard-court events that Medvedev is yet to fully master – the other being the Miami Open. His best result in the Californian city is a third-round stint in 2019.
But that was two years ago. Medvedev is now a world-class player, superior to what he was back then. With a litany of wins over top 10 players, he is more than equipped to go the distance this time around.

McDonald Starts Strong
Mackenzie McDonald started his campaign in Indian Wells with a 6-3, 6-3 win over James Duckworth.
While he hopes to go further, being pitted against a player like Medvedev doesn’t bode well for his chances, especially when we look at the season he has had.
The 26-year-old American, currently ranked World No. 57, has lost in the early rounds in his last three competitions. That said, a surprise final run in the ATP Washington propelled him from the #107th position into the top 60. Alongside a couple of deep runs on the Challenger circuit, these performances mark the key moments of his 2021 spell.
However, there have been a few instances where McDonald has shown some promise – in the Australian Open, he beat the likes of Borna Coric and Lloyd Harris to reach the fourth round. In Miami Open and French Open, he made it as far as round two as a qualifier.

Unless Medvedev is having a bad day or McDonald pulls a rabbit out of the hat, we can safely assume the Russian to breeze into the third round comfortably.
