Gael Monfils v Gianluca Mager Head to Head
Monfils and Mager have been involved in just one career head-to-head meeting till date. The pair met in the quarter-finals of the Sofia Open this year, with the Frenchman prevailing in straight sets.

Although he missed out on lifting the title at the Sofia Open, going down in straight sets to defending champion Jannik Sinner in the championship clash, Monfils arrived at the Indian Wells Masters with the confidence of a runner-up finisher and in the hope of similar, if not, better showing.
He opened his Sofia campaign with a walkover win over Ilya Ivashka of Belarus and followed it up with two comprehensive victories over Gianluca Mager of Italy and Marcos Giron of the US to set up a championship clash with last year’s champion and Italian teen tennis sensation Jannik Sinner.
Having not won a Tour title since Rotterdam last year, the 35-year-old Frenchman demonstrated his desire to gun for the championship trophy with a brutal 7-5, 6-0 takedown of Giron in the last four at the Bulgarian capital.
In the final, however, the Frenchman more than met his match in defending champion Sinner. Setting and dictating the pace early in the contest, the Italian ran out a 6-3 winner in the opening set.
With the momentum firmly with his opponent, there wasn’t much Monfils could do as the Italian, wary to let the Frenchman into the contest, stood strong till the end to close out a deserving 6-3, 6-4 victory.
However, even in his defeat, the Frenchman took plenty of positives from a sensational campaign that will give him a clear edge as he opens his campaign at the Indian Wells Masters against Mager, for the second time in a matter of days, on Sunday.
Monfils will also take the momentum from his win over the Italian in Bulgarian capital and, barring a meltdown, should fancy going through to the next round without much trouble.

Mager Takes Down Fucsovics
Coming into the Indian Wells Masters on the back of a quarter-final finish at the Sofia Open, which, though modest in terms of returns, marked a significant improvement from his opening-round exit at the Moselle Open, Mager opened his campaign against this year’s Wimbledon quarter -finalist Marton Fucsovics.
With still no title against his name, the 73rd-ranked Italian seemed on course to being condemned to another opening-round defeat after dropping the first set against the Hungarian.
However, staging a spirited fightback this time, Mager won the second set by a handsome margin. With a spring in his step, the Italian bossed his opponent in the decider to close out a fine 1-6, 6-3, 6-2 win.
He faces a much tougher road to the third round as he would go up against his nemesis from Sofia, Monfils, in his next. Though humbled by the Frenchman in his last outing against him, the Italian will take the confidence from his opening-round performance to push for a win this time.
Monfils v Mager Prediction and Tip
While his superior ranking and win in his only previous outing against Mager will give Monfils a clear edge going into this second-round tie, the Italian will fancy settling scores after a rousing come-from-behind win in the first round.
