Lorenzo Sonego v Kevin Anderson Head to Head

Sonego and Anderson have never been involved in a career, head-to-head meeting before. However, with the Italian regarded as a player who is know to combine skills with an indomitable spirit and Anderson being the canny old warhorse, an absorbing contest is on the cards as the two go against each other for the first time ever.

Sonego Coming off San Diego QF

Going one better than his last-16 finish at the Moselle Open, Sonego recorded a run to the quarter-finals at his next Tour event, the San Diego Open.

Currently ranked just outside the top-20 in singles, the Italian opened his campaign with a flawless an fine win over hard-hitting Georgian Nikoloz Basilashvili and followed it up with another comprehensive victory over rising American Sebastian Korda to reach the quarter-finals.

The win saw him set up a last-eight showdown with in-form Norwegian Casper Ruud.

Having waged a strong campaign up to that point, the 26-year-old Italian couldn’t put up a fight against the Norwegian, who had already picked up a rash of titles coming into the final.

Sonego fell to a tame 1-6 defeat to the Norwegian in the opening and couldn’t recover thereafter as Ruud put the finishing touches to his fifth Tour title this season.

However, the Italian will have a shot at redemption as he opens his campaign at the Indian Wells Masters against veteran South African star Kevin Anderson on Sunday.

While the two haven’t played each other before,  Sonego could ill afford to relax against the big South African if his opening-round win is any indication.

However, the confidence of finishing in the last eight of his previous event should rub off well on him, giving him a edge going into the contest.

Anderson Takes Down Thompson in Opener

Not not the same player as he was in his heydays, Anderson could still be more than a handful for top rivals on his day and he gave ample demonstration of the same in his opening clash at the Indian Wells Masters.

Taking the wounds from a opening-round loss in San Diego to current British No.1 Dan Evans, the 35-year-old South African started well against his first-round opponent, Australian Jordan Thompson.

Cashing in on a break of serve, Anderson bagged the first set 7-5. With the momentum with him, the lanky South African stepped on the gas in the second to eventually race home 7-5, 6-2.

However, between the veteran star and a place in the third round stands emerging Italian Lorenzo Sonego. As was evidenced by his spirited showing against World No.1 Novak Djokovic in the in the semifinal at Rome this year, the Italian never shies away from a scrap and will be no pushover for the wily South African i Sunday’s clash.

Sonego v Anderson Prediction and Tip

While Sonego’s ranking and recent run of results should give him a clear edge going into this second-round clash, Anderson’s fine win in the first round coukd make this contest a lot closer than most pre-match estimates say.

Tip: Sonego to win in three sets: 3/1 (Click Here to Bet with bet365)
