Barbora Krejcikova made a winning start on her Indian Wells debut, defeating Kazakhstan’s Zarina Diyas in a close three-set encounter.

The Czech, who has been in sublime form throughout the season, broke her opponent twice to take a 3-0 lead in the first set. But a defiant Diyas won the next three games to draw level. Krejcikova restored her advantage by breaking the Kazakh in the next game and then held on to the lead to take the first.

The second set started with three breaks of serve and once again it was Krejcikova who led 2-1, but she couldn’t keep the lead for long as Diyas came back with two more breaks to  force the decider.

There were no more hiccups for the World No. 5 though as she dominated the third with to breaks to clinch the contest 6-4, 3-6, 6-1 in two hours and three minutes.

The Czech’s astronomical rise in singles has turned heads this season. Along with her maiden Grand Slam title at Roland Garros, Krejcikova has also won titles at Strasbourg and Prague and finished runner-up in Dubai. Saturday’s win was her 44th of the season and she will be aiming for a 45th against Anisimova on Monday.

Anisimova Flying Past Opponents

America’s Amanada Anisimova is in stunning form at Indian Wells. After needing just 53 minutes to eliminate compatriot Katrina Scott in the first round, the World No. 81 needed an hour and 23 minutes to dump out the No. 30 seed Camila Giorgi on Saturday.

Anisimova, who didn’t face a single break point in her 6-1, 6-1 win over Scott, faced four break points against Giorgi but she saved half of them. She also held 14 break points against the Italian in the second round, converting six of them on her way to a 6-4, 6-1 victory.

This is the first time since the Canadian Open, and fourth time this year, that Anisimova has won the first two rounds. She fell in the second rounds of the Chicago Open, the U.S. Open and the Chicago Fall Classic.

With Saturday’s win, the 20-year-old is 18-15 for the season. Her best results in 2021 included visits to the quarterfinals in Parma and Hamburg.

Krejcikova v Anisimova Prediction and Tip

It’s been a massive year for Krejcikova and it will be a real surprise if she doesn’t go deep in the tournament. Expect the American to ask some difficult questions but the Czech should eventually have all the answers. Krejcikova to advance.
