Denis Shapovalov v Aslan Karatsev Head to Head

Shapovalov and Karatsev have never been involved in a career head-to-head meeting before. However, both are fierce competitors in their ow right and should produce a thrilling contest in their first-ever head-to-head outing.

Shapovalov Profits from Pospisil Walkover

After finishing in the quarter-final of the San Diego Open, which was some way short of where he would have desired to be coming into the tournament, Shapovalov drew fellow countryman Vasek Pospisil in his Indian Wells opener.

And, in line with most pre-match estimates, the current World No.13 seemed to be on course to a comfortable win before a stroke of misfortune brought an early close to this contest.

Pospisil was trailing 0-3 in the opening set when he came down with an injury which eventually forced him to concede the tie to his fellow Canadian.

By virtue of the win via a walkover, Shapovalov set up a third-round showdown with spirited Russian Aslan Karatsev. In many ways, the Canadian’s true test test in the tournament begins now as the Russian is someone who gives back as good as he gets and is not known to go down quietly even against top rivals.

While the two have never played each other before, both are seasoned hands on the men’s Tour and have seen enough of each other in action which will go into¬† devising their individual game plans for Monday’s crackerjack clash.

Karatsev Screams Past Caruso

Coming into the Indian Wells Masters on the back of a quarter-final loss to Bulgarian Grigor Dimitrov at the San Diego Open, Karatsev opened his campaign against little-known Italian Salvatore Caruso.

Determined to put himself among the title contenders, the 23rd-ranked Russian served up an absolute masterclass to streak past the hapless Italian in no time.

After bageling Caruso in the opening set, Karatsev dished out more of the same treatment in the second to coast to a commanding 6-0, 6-2 win. As the final score-line suggested, it was a lopsided affair with the Italian hardly being afforded a hint of an opening to get himself back in the contest.

However, one suspects that it won’t be as easy for the Russian in his next against the current World No. 13 Denis Shapovalov. In what is a straight shootout between this year’s Wimbledon semifinalist against the unlikely Australian Open semifinalist, not a quarter will be yielded by either combatant and none taken.

While shorn of head-to-head spice, the match, one suspects, won’t be short of thrills and spills as both are know to play hard and not yield till the final point is called.

Though merely coincidental and not a piece of trivia that will have any bearing on this third-round contest, both Shapovalov and Karatsev went down to the same opponent, World No.1 Novak Djokovic, in the Grand Slam semifinals that they featured in this year.

Shapovaov v Karatsev Prediction and Tip

While Shapovalov’s superior ranking will keep him slightly ahead in the contest, Karatsev’s margin of victory in his tournament opener will give him the confidence to take down the Canadian in this third-round tie.
