Diego Schwartzman v Dan Evans Head to Head

The pair have played each other once before, and that was in Cincinnati less than two months ago, Schwartzman winning their first round encounter in three sets.

Schwartzman Pushed Close by American Qualifier

Whilst Schwartzman is better known as a clay court specialist – he was a quarter-finalist at Roland Garros in June – he has a decent record in North American hard court master’s events in 2021, having reached the fourth round in Miami, and the third in both Cincinnati and Toronto.

Having been given a first round bye, he was made to work for his third round berth though by the American qualifier Maxime Cressy, the world number 145.

Schwartzman, despite facing break points himself, had the upper hand in the first set, and two breaks enabled him to claim it with relative ease.

He was broken though early in the second set, and this time it was Cressy who was able to manage the rest of proceedings as it headed into the decider.

And when Schwartzman dropped his serve again early in the third set, an upset looked on the cards.

But serving for the match, Cressy let the pressure of the occasion get to him and he dropped his serve, Sensing his opportunity, Schwartzman then broke him again to claim a hard fought victory.

Evans Overcomes Nishikori Challenge

Although Evans best results came at the start of the year – he won his maiden ATP final at the Murray River Open in Melbourne, and reached the semi-finals of the Monte Carlo Masters – the 31 year old still has plenty to play for this season, not least whether he can pip Cameron Norrie to become the British number one going into the winter.

A good run in Indian Wells, where his previous best was a second round appearance in 2017, would certainly help his cause.

A first round bye meant that he had already emulated that achievement by the time that he stepped on court against Kei Nishikori, the Japanese number one, on Saturday.

Nishikori began the better of the two, breaking Evans midway through the first set. The Englishman levelled straight away, but was immediately broken again, and, in his next service game, had to save five set points.

He managed that, but could not prevent the man from Japan from taking the set on his own serve.

Evans though gradually worked his way into the match, and began to create break points. Nishikori had already saved a number when he was finally broken, and from there Evans was able to consolidate and bring the match back to all-square.

The third set might have gone either way, with Evans the first to defend break points, However, it was he who achieved the only break of the set and served for the match. Nishikori had two break-back opportunities, could not take them, and was punished when Evans put away his second match point.

Schwartzman v Evans Prediction and Tip

Both men were taken to three sets in their second round matches, and this contest will probably be close like their earlier meeting in Cincinnati. Schwartzman though won that encounter, and may just have the edge over Evans.
