Andrey Rublev v Tommy Paul Head to Head

Andrey Rublev has a 100% winning record against Paul, having beaten the American in all three previous meetings. However, two of those matches went the distance including their most recent match at this year’s Madrid Masters.

Can Rublev Scale the Third-Round Hurdle?

Far from being one of the favorites to lift the title this week, Andrey Rublev has a very mediocre record at the Indian Wells Masters.

Prior to this week, the Russian had won one main draw match in three previous visits, and which came after earning his berth as a lucky loser two years ago. But we shouldn’t forget that in 2019 the Russian was on a comeback trail after spending the previous season nursing a career-threatening back injury.

Rublev has returned to the desert looking to atone for his previous failings. Rublev defeated Spain’s Carlos Taberner in straight sets on Saturday night on Court 2 to cruise into the third round.

The World No. 5 was critical of the slower conditions during the night, but that did not intervene on his way to a comfortable win over World No. 116 Taberner. He broke his 24-year-old opponent three times in the match and overcame a second-set wobble to progress.

Overall, Rublev served six aces and averaged 73% first-serve points won. He will be looking to keep his winning streak over Tommy Paul intact when he faces the American on Monday.

Paul Ousts Serbia’s Dusan Lajovic

Tommy Paul reached the third round on his main draw debut after playing flawless tennis to defeat Serbia’s Dusan Lajovic 6-2 6-3 in precisely an hour.

Paul won 83% first-serve points – dropping only four points, and 71% second-serve points – dropping five points. He did not face a single break point the entire evening.

The American raced to a commanding 4-0 lead in the first set with a double break. Lajovic had a difficult time handling Paul’s bludgeoning forehand which dictated proceedings and kept him pinned behind the baseline.

Once the World No. 60 bagged the first set 6-2, the Serbian World No. 35 managed to regroup and stay competitive in the early goings of the second stanza. Paul had knocked the door twice in that set, manufacturing two break points which were snuffed away, but the third time was a charm.

He broke Lajovic twice in quick succession to confirm victory.

Rublev v Paul Prediction and Tip

Rublev should the favorite but we don’t think he will outplay Paul for vast stretches. The American tends to be a tough cookie for the Russian in this matchup, and we reckon Monday’s meeting is likely to follow suit.
