Sinner Through After Isner Withdraws

Jannik Sinner got a free pass to the fourth round after his third round opponent John Isner withdrew from the Indian Wells Open for the birth of his third child.

The Italian, who defended his Sofia Open title this month, began his maiden Indian Wells campaign with a 6-2, 6-2 drubbing of Australia’s John Millman. Sinner didn’t face a single break and dropped just eight points on his serve as he demolished the Aussie in an hour and 15 minutes.

The 20-year-old World No. 14 had beaten Gael Monfils in the Sofia final to win his third title of the season and a fourth of his career.

In addition to the Sofia title, the Italian, who has a 38-17 overall record this season, also triumphed at Melbourne 1 and Washington and finished runner-up in Miami, as a result of which he has a 28-9 record on hard court, the surface that brings the best out of him. On Wednesday, he will be aiming to reach an eighth quarterfinal this season.

Fritz Knocks Out Berrettini

Facing Sinner will be American Taylor Fritz who knocked out fifth seed Matteo Berrettini in the third round on Tuesday.

The Italian, who was knocked out in the first round of his previous two appearances at Indian Wells, could win only one match this year as he was sent packing by Fritz in straight sets.

The 31st seed, who raced to a 5-1 lead in the first set, thwarted a comeback effort from Berretini to serve out the first set 6-4. He dominated the second set though, getting the only break of the set to clinch the contest 6-4, 6-3.

Ranked No. 39 in the world, Fritz improved to 24-18 following Tuesday’s win. He reached back-to-back semifinals in Los Cabos and Atlanta but lost form since then, and came into the tournament with a 2-6 record from his last eight matches.

He had begun his Indian Wells challenge by ousting compatriot Brandon Nakashima in the second round on Sunday, wrapping up the one-hour-and-21-minute contest 6-3, 6-4.

Having featured in four semifinals this season, including the ones in Cagliari and Doha, the 23-year-old now has sights on a fifth quarterfinal berth in 2021.

Sinner v Fritz Prediction and Tip
