Sabalenka Missed Indian Wells Due to Covid

Aryna Sabalenka will make her much-anticipated return to action at the 25th staging of the Kremlin Cup in Moscow. incidentally, this will be Sabalenka’s main draw debut in these parts having fallen in the qualifying rounds in her only previous visit five years ago.

The Belarusian powerhouse has produced a spectacular season by her own lofty standards. With two titles to her name and rising to a career-high ranking of World No. 2, this has been a major step in her evolution.

And talking of evolution, Sabalenka’s record at Grand Slam tournaments has been another feel-good factor in her camp. She reached the semifinals at Wimbledon and US Open, clearly showing her mettle and living up to the hype that has always come her way at Major tournaments.

With 43 match wins this season, only Ons Jabeur eclipses her in the leaderboard in 2021, but you could make a case for Sabalenka tallying a few wins has she played in Indian Wells. The 23-year-old missed out from playing at the desert after testing positive for COVID-19.

Tonljanovic Takes Out Samsonova

In one of the toughest first-rounders that you could have, Ajla Tomljanovic knocked off the home favorite Ludmilla Samsonova to reach the second round for the second time in four visits on Monday.

Samsonova has forged a reputation as one of the most feared players in the draw having won a maiden WTA title in Berlin as a qualifier and ascending to a career-high ranking of World No. 42.

But the 22-year-old Russian was largely second-best against Tomljanovic who has the measure of Samsonova throughout their one and half hour contest.

Samsonova served six aces but accounted for four double faults. She made a horrible start to proceedings as Toljanovic coasted to take the opening four games without reply. The Australian fought power with her own power and rounded off the first set 6-2.

It was a similar pattern in the second set, with Tomljanovic securing two breaks of serve. But even after dropping her own serve at 1-4, the insurance break proved decisive.

Sabalenka v Tomljanovic Prediction and Tip

Tomljanovic has garnered some fine wins in recent weeks, but her major obstacle continues to be her inconsistency. We don’t envisage an upset in this one.

Tip: Sabalenka to win in three sets: 3/1 (Click Here to Bet with bet365)
