Alexandrova Advances Following Jabeur Retirement

World No. 37 Ekaterina Alexandrova moved into the second round after her first-round opponent, the in-form Ons Jabeur retired while trailing 6-1, 1-0.

After both players held on to win their first service games, the Russian began dominating the contest and won five games in a row to wrap up the set. The in-form Tunisian had taken a 0-40 lead  in the fifth game of the set, but Alexandrova still managed to hold serve, saving four break points in that game.

Down a set and 1-0 in the second, the fifth seed Jabeur eventually retired with an elbow injury.

With the win, Alexandrova is now 23-20 for the season. She had a good start to the season reaching the semifinals of the Gippsland Trophy, but couldn’t continue playing at the same level throughout the year.

On Wednesday, she will be aiming to reach a sixth quarterfinal of the season.

Kalinina Shocks Former Champion

Anhelina Kalinina began her challenge by taking out the 2018 Kremlin Cup champion Daria Kasatkina in the first round on Monday.

The Ukrainian converted 8 of 15 break. point chances and converted 5 of 9 as she ousted Kasatkina 6-2, 6-3 in one hour and 23 minutes.

Kalinina, who reached her first tour-level final in Budapest in July, came into the tournament with a 2-4 record since that success.

A very solid clay-court player, Kalinina won four of her 14 ITF titles this year, all on the same surface. The 24-year-old tends to struggle a bit on hard though, but having started with an upset win over Kasatkina, who was also a runner-up in Moscow in 2017, Kalinina will hope to keep the run going. Can she reach a second tour-level quarterfinal?

Alexandrova v Kalinina Prediction and Tip
