Pavlyuchenkova In Contention For WTA Finals Spot

With about 700 points separating Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova from 8th spot in the WTA Race, the Russian is still mathematically in contention to qualify for the WTA Finals.

As many as six players are seeking their berths at the seasoning-ending championships in Guadalajara. We are still unsure about the participation of Naomi Osaka or Ashleigh Barty who have both withdrawn from forthcoming tennis tournaments.

That could mean 10th spot is good enough for qualification, and that may mean Pavlyuchenkova has to repeat her heroics from 2014 when she triumphed at the Kremlin Cup. She has finished twice as runner-up in subsequent editions most notably in 2019 during the last staging of the event before the coronavirus pandemic.

Pavlyuchenkova is almost guaranteed to finish with a Top-20 year-end ranking for just the third time in her 15-year career. That was boosted by her superb European clay-court form which saw her reach the final of the French Open.

Pera Yet To Drop A Set In Moscow

World No. 100 Bernarda Pera did not warrant a place in the main draw of the WTA 500 event due to her low ranking status. But that didn’t stop the American lefty to book her spot via the qualifying rounds where she knocked out Erika Andreeva and Vera Lapko in straight sets.

And in her main draw debut on Monday, she defeated fellow qualifier Aleksandra Krunic who was in terrific form herself over the weekend.

Pera used her authoritative groundstrokes by creating angles and finishing off the Serbian within 97 minutes. Both players traded two breaks in the first set, and the Krunic needed to stave off five set points to hold for 5-5. Eventually, the set went into a tiebreak where the American overcame a bad start to dominate it.

In the second set, it was all Pera. The World No. 100 secured three breaks of serve to claim victory.

Pavlyuchenkova v Pera Prediction and Tip

Pera has looked in fine fettle to reach this stage, but she is coming up against one of the most decorated players in Kremlin Cup history. Expect the experienced Russian to sail into the quarters.
