Sakkari Will Look To Shake Off Indian Wells Disappointment

Stunned by Viktorija Golubic in her opening match at Indian Wells, World No. 7 Maria Sakkari will be looking to get back to winning ways when she begins her campaign in the second round of the Kremlin Cup on Thursday.

The Greek has been in terrific form throughout the season and that can be seen in her ranking progression. Sakkari broke into the top 10 following her run to the final of the Ostrava Open in September. It was the first time this year that the 26-year-old had reached the final, but she couldn’t add to the Rabat title which she won in 2019, going down to Annett Kontaveit in straight sets.

Before that performance in Ostrava, Sakkari had reached five semifinals this year but couldn’t go past the final four stage. Among those final four appearances were her first and second Grand Slam semifinals at Roland Garros and the U.S. Open. The other three came in Miami, Abu Dhabi and the Grampians Trophy.

Sakkari brings a 34-17 season record to the tournament and will be desperately looking to go all the way to the title.

Qualifier Kalinskaya Knocks Out Yastremska

World No. 125 Anna Kalinskaya pulled off a shock win over Ukraine’s Dayana Yastremska in the first round of the tournament on Monday.

After both players had broken each other twice, the set went to a tiebreak, which Kalinskaya won to go one-up.

Kalinskaya broke her opponent twice to build a 5-1 lead in the second, but found it difficult to close out the contest as Yastremska tried to make a comeback, winning three in a row.  alinskaya eventually held nerves in a close 10th game, saving a break point and converting her fourth match points to win the contest 7-6 (7-5), 6-4.

The Russian had earlier beaten Viktoria Kuzmova and Vitalia Diatchenko in the qualifying rounds.

Kalinskaya’s recent form has been very good. She made her fourth round debut at Indian Wells and will be hoping to reach a second quarterfinal of the season with a win on Thursday.

Sakkari v Kalinskaya Prediction and Tip

Sakkari has had a great year, but would be disappointed not to have won a title. She will be hoping to get off to a good start and set the tone for tournament. The Greek should win this in straight sets.
