Marin Cilic v Pedro Martinez Head to Head

Cilic and Martinez have no previous history. Friday’s match will be their first clash in their head-to-head.

Cilic Topples Paul To Advance

Marin Cilic is among the most decorated players in Kremlin Cup history, having triumphed at this tournament multiple times in the past. And it was only logical that the Croat would rediscover his winning touch this week to snap his three-match losing streak.

His quest for a third title began with a three-set first-round win over Damir Dzumhur, with Cilic recovering from dropping the first set and ending up winning 12 of the last 13 games to turn the match around.

And in the Round of 16 on Wednesday, the 33-year-old faced a daunting task against the rapidly improving Tommy Paul. The American had masterminded one of the finest wins of his career at Indian Wells when he shocked Andrey Rublev en route to the fourth round.

But both players were slow off the blocks. There were four breaks of serve in the first six games. Cilic, however, managed to up the ante towards the end of the set, breaking Paul in the 12th game to take the lead.

In the second set the Croat grabbed the match by the scruff of its neck as he raced to a 4-2 lead. He snuffed away danger by saving the lone breakpoint he faced in the set and converted his second match point to advance.

Martinez Stuns Krajinovic

Pedro Martinez was long odds to defeat Filip Krajinovic on Thursday, but tennis can be a funny old sport at times. Martinez had never played a main draw match on an indoor hardcourt prior to 2021. And he had only made a handful of appearances on the Challenger tour without making any substantial impact.

But against KRajinovic –  a former finalist on Paris, Bercy- he played superbly for over precisely an hour and a half to book his spot in the quarterfinals of the Kremlin Cup.

Martinez won 6-3 6-4, firing down seven aces and winning 74% first-serve points. What made him even more dangerous was his ability to rob Krajinovic time and space to unleash from the baseline.

The Spaniard won 15 out of 39 returns points on the Serbian’s first serve, and even better on his second delivery – 14 from 22. And crucially, he broke his opponent four times from nine opportunities.

Cilic v Martinez Prediction and Tip

As expected, Cilic will start as the favorite, but admittedly he has shown patches of vulnerability during the week. And with the way Martinez has found a different gear on this surface, we cannot rule out an upset.
