Bublik High On belief After Brushing Aside Rookie Russian

After the semifinal finish at the Astana Open, Bublik entered the draw at the Kremlin Cup high on confidence and determined to push for his maiden career title.

However, 34th-ranked tennis star from Kazakhstan suffered a massive jolt in the opening round in Moscow instead after he went down in straight sets against up and coming Ukrainian Illya Marchenko.

Bublik fell off the pace in the early exchanges as the Ukrainian cashed in on a break of serve to take the opening set 6-4. The Russia-born Kazakh star couldn’t recover thereafter as Marchenko, riding on momentum and confidence, raced to a clear lead in the second set and cruised home 6-4, 6-3.

Hoping for a better run of fortune at his next event, the St. Petersburg Open, Bublik opened his campaign against relatively lightweight Russian Evgeny Tyurnev.

And. living up to most pre-match estimates, the seasoned pro had an easy outing against the rookie, trouncing him in straight sets.

However, the battle does get tougher from here for the Kazakh star as he will next face hard-hitting German Jan-Lennard Struff for a place in the quarter-finals.

The German won their only previous head-to-head outing and looking at how his opening-round clash panned out, he won’t make it any easier for Bublik in their second career meeting on Wednesday.

Struff Hoping to Do An Encore Of His Previous Win Over Struff

Struff came into the St. Petersburg Open on the back of two straight second-round exits at the Indian Wells Masters and at Antwerp. Hoping to get off to winning start in the Russian city and kick on from there, the tall German opened his campaign against Australian James Duckworth.

With nothing to separate the two players at the end of the regulation 12 games in the opening set, a tiebreak ensued.  Getting a mini-break and building on it further, the 53rd-ranked Struff edged out the Australian in the tiebreak to take the opening set.

The second set was more of a cruise for the German, as, switching to a higher gear, Struff flattened the Aussie challenge to get over the line in straight sets. The eventual score-line read 7-6 (7-3), 6-3 in the German’s favor.

The impressive victory set him up for a second-round showing against Bublik, an opponent he conquered in their only previous head-to-head clash.

While the win will give give a burst of belief going into Wednesday’s outing, Bublik, on his day, could be a handful for the best of rivals. Hence, previous history between the two would matter little as they cross swords for the only the second time in the Austrian capital.

Bublik v Struff Prediction and Tip

While Bublik finds himself marginally higher in the rankings currently and has a better run of results behind him, Struff holds a head-to-head lead over his Kazakh rival and will draw plenty of motivation from his opening-round win ahead of Wednesday’s clash.
