Rublev Looking to End 2021 on a High

It has been another fine season for Rublev, who will be playing in the ATP finals for the second successive year in a few weeks’ time in Turin.

Not only did he win the gold medal in the Mixed Doubles at the Olympics with partner Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova, but he also won his eighth career title in Rotterdam, and has reached three other finals, including that of two Masters events, Monte Carlo, and Cincinnati.

And, with partner Aslan Karatsev, he won the doubles at the Qatar Open, and finished runners-up at Indian Wells.

He is looking for a strong finish to the year, especially playing in front of a home crowd, and will be looking to make up for the disappointment of Moscow last week, where he was also the top seed, but lost his opening round match to Adrian Mannarino of France in three sets.

And he made a good start to his latest campaign in St. Petersburg with a comfortable win over Laslo Djere of Serbia, the world number 52, in the first round on Tuesday.

The first seven games of the match went with serve but then two successive breaks were enough toot give the Belarussian the set.

He then broke again midway through the second set, saved two break points on his own serve, and then underlined his dominance with a further break to close out the match.
