Simona Halep started her journey in her home tournament of Transylvania Open with a 6-1, 6-2 win over her compatriot Elena-Gabriela Ruse. In what was one of those classic performances by the 30-year-old, the Romanian dished out six aces and won 83 percent of the points behind the first serve.
It was a good game for the current World No. 18 who dropped out of the top 10 for the first time since January 2014, following an injury-stricken season and the consequent drop in form.
Halep was enjoying a good spell at the beginning when she reached the quarterfinal in the Gippsland Trophy and Australian Open, and later the semis in Stuttgart. But a series of unfortunate injuries kept her out of play for most of the clay and the entirety of grass swings.
She returned to the tour in the US Open series and has been reviving her routine since. The top seed’s best results in the country came in the US Open (fourth round) and the Indian Wells Open (third round). The two-time Grand Slam winner last featured in the Kremlin Cup where she lost to Maria Sakkari in straight sets.

Gracheva Survives Petkovic
Varvara Gracheva had to work hard for her opening-round win in Cluj-Napoca. She played Andrea Petkovic – a player 13 years more experienced than her – won with 6-4, 2-6, 6-4 in a little over two hours.
The 21-year-old will now play her first match against a major finalist since playing Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova in the third round of the US Open (she lost that match in straight sets). Following that run in New York, Gracheva lost in the early rounds in Ostrava, Luxembourg, and most recently Tenerife. Between these events, the Russian played in Astana where she made it to the quarters.
The current World No. 81 has had a muted season on the whole, except for a few instances where she reached the third round and beyond. Of course, that hasn’t translated into much on the WTA Tour (yet) but the youngster lacks the pedigree at the moment to take on the big guns.

Halep should win this one with ease, given her experience and superior form. Expect the Romanian to continue her fine run.
