Simona Halep v Marta Kostyuk Head to Head

Just a few weeks separate their first and thus far only meeting until Saturday’s clash. Halep defeated Kostyuk in straight sets at the 2021 BNP Paribas Open in Indian Wells.

Halep Romps Past Compatriot Cristian

It took just 67 minutes – perhaps longer than that it should have been – for Simona Halep to romp to victory in Friday’s quarterfinal matches. Halep barely showed any remorse against compatriot Jaqueline Cristian in a comfortable 6-1 6-1 win.

Following her second-round win over Varvara Gracheva on Thursday in a match she suffered a back injury, there was no such recurrence in this latest win over Cristian.

Much of this week centered around Emma Raducanu’s return to her father’s homeland as the newly-crowned US Open champion, forgetting that Halep was indeed the top seed and the most accomplished champion in the draw.

But that did not in any way deter Halep’s focus or determination to excel at her home tournament. The Romanian star produced yet another indoor masterclass to maintain her 100% winning record against Romanian players (15-0).

Halep drew as many as 46 unforced errors from Cristian’s racket which pretty much told the whole story of this gruesome afternoon for the 23-year-old. The top seed won 81% first-serve points and broke her opponent’s serve five times.

Kostyuk Wins All-Teen Quarterfinal

Marta Kostyuk produced one of the biggest upsets at this week’s Transylvania Open, beating third-seeded Emma Raducanu 6-2 6-1 to settle the much-anticipated all-teenage quarterfinal in sensational style.

Both Raducanu and Kostyuk were born in 2002, but almost five months apart. And this year, it has been the Brit who has emerged as the frontrunner in leading the WTA’s next generation.

But on the evidence of Friday’s quarterfinal match, it almost appeared as though Kostyuk has Raducanu’s number. From the getgo, she managed to break the British No. 1’s serve from 15-40 down. That was of course helped by two untimely double faults and set the tone for a dominant win.

Raducanu coughed as many as seven double faults at intermittent periods in the match. She also committed 41 unforced errors – almost three times Kostyuk’s number.

Kostyuk, who is within touching distance of breaking the Top 50, has now reached her third semifinal of the year and her first since Istanbul at the end of April.

Halep v Kostyuk Prediction and Tip

Both players have been hyper-aggressive and thoughtful in reaching this stage. Kostyuk has pointed out just how much work she will need to put in after their last meeting at Indian Wells. And in fairness, not much considering how well she played in that first set. We are treading with the games market here, but a Kostyuk win could very much materialize.
