Clara Tauson v Donna Vekic Head to Head

The pair have never played each other before. This will be the first match between the 18-year old Dane, and the Croat, who is seven years older.

Tauson Hauls Herself Back From the Brink

Tauson has already shown that she has what it takes to succeed at the highest level this year by winning the titles in Lyon and Luxembourg.

And on Saturday, she proved that she possesses another characteristic of champions – courage – as she hauled herself back from the brink of defeat in her semi-final with Liudmila Samsonova of Russia, the number three seed.

Samsonova had stared the better taking the opening set and then going a break up in the second. Tauson though was able to level, and it went to a tie-break,

The fortunes then fluctuated and the Dane not only had two set points saved but then found herself staring down the barrel at a match point. She saved it and then another, and was finally able to level the match.

Again, she was the first woman to drop her serve in the third set, but immediately recovered with a  break of her own, and then broke the Russian again, allowing her to serve out for the match.

Vekic Thrashes Local Favourite

It is wholly out of character with the rest of her season that Vekic now finds herself in the final in Courmayeur, but she saved the best to last with an utterly dominant display against the local favourite Jasmine Paolini, who had beaten the top seed Dayan Yastremska in their quarter-final on Friday.

The Croat broke the Italian in her opening service game and, although Paolini briefly gave herself hope by levelling the match, she immediately dropped her serve once more, and then again to hand Vekic the set.

Paolini had two break points against the Vekic serve in the opening game of the second set, could take neither, and it was downhill for the Italian from there. She was not to win another game in the match, and bowed out of the tournament in disappointing fashion, knowing she had not done herself justice on the night.

Tauson v Vekic Prediction and Tip

Although Vekic had much the easier semi-finals, Tauson is young so should be able to recover in time for Sunday, where, as the woman who has already won two titles this year, she will start favourite to make it a third.
