Marin Cilic v Alejandro Davidovich-Fokina Head to Head

The pair have played each other once before, in Cologne last year, the Spaniard winning in three sets on an indoor hard court.

Cilic Finds Some Late Season Form

Up until the past few weeks, the highlight for Cilic of 2021 had been winning the doubles at the Olympics in July.

However, he found some late, and wholly welcome late season form in Russia, beginning with Moscow, where he had a good record, having won the Kremlin Cup in 2014 and 2015, and reached the final again, only to lose to Aslan Karatsev.

From there he travelled to St. Petersburg, where he reached the final again, beating both Karen Khachanov and Pablo Carreno-Busta in the process.

He plays the American Taylor Fritz in the final later on Sunday.

He has a good record in Paris, having reached the semi-fianl here in 2016, and making the quarter-finals in the two succeeding years.

Davidovich-Fokina Prefers Clay

Davidovich-Fokina is coming to the end of another season with nothing to show for it in terms of titles – his only senior tournament victory was in the doubles at the Chile Open last year before lockdown.

His best result this year was at the Monte Carlo Masters, where he got to the quarter-finals but that was on clay, his preferred surface, which suits his natural game. He is renowned for having one of the best drop shots on tour, and has a propensity to serve underarm at times.

Last year he reached the third round in Paris, his best result in a Masters’ event before Monte Carlo.

He last appeared in Antwerp where he reached the quarter-finals only to lose to the American Jenson Brooksby.

Cilic v Fokina Prediction and Tip

The Spaniard won their only previous meeting and is the better rested of the pair, not having played for several weeks. However, provided Cilic still has some energy left after his exertions in Russia, he should win as the man in form.
