James Duckworth v Lorenzo Musetti Head to Head

The pair have never played each other before. This will be the first match between the 29-year old Australian and the Italian, who is a decade younger.

Duckworth Upsets Spaniard

Duckworth is one of those players who have found some form late in the season, winning a Challenger event in Istanbul, reaching the final in Nur-Sultan and the quarter-finals in Sofia.

Despite that he started the underdog against the fourteenth seed, Roberto Batuista-Agut during their first round match on Tuesday.

It was the Australian who made the better starting, breaking the world number 20 in his opening service game. The Spaniard later recovered that break, only to drop his serve once more, handing the first set to his opponent.

The second set stayed on serve until a sequence of three dropped games saw Batuista-Agut finish a break ahead. He consolidated that to level the match.

When Duckworth was broken early in the third set he seemed to be heading for defeat. But, after saving two break points against him in his next game he rallied, broke back, and the match was decided by a tie-break.

Again, Duckworth seemed to be in trouble when he went a mini-break down, only to hit back with three breaks of his own. And, when given the chance to serve for the match, he duly took it.

Musetti Makes Personal History Against Serb

Musetti’s warm-up for the NextGen ATP finals in Milan is going well.

The Italian had already survived two three set battles in qualifying to make the main draw, having beaten two French competitors in the form of Lucas Pouille and Hugo Gaston.

On Monday, he met Laslo Djere of Serbia, a man he had lost to in all three of their previous meetings, including two earlier matches this year.

And initially it looks like history would repeat itself, as the Serb won the first set and broke at the start of the second. But the Italian hit back to level straight way, and it went to a tie-break which he eventually won.

The pair swapped breaks in the third set, but then another break gave Musetti a  lead he was not to relinquish. He served out, clinching the victory with his fourth match point.

Duckworth v Musetti Prediction and Tip

Both players started underdogs in their first round matches, so neither was expected to feature in the second round. But having got this far, they will want to go further. It is likely to be close, but Duckworth’s greater experience may just be the difference.
