Daniel Evans v Frances Tiafoe Head to Head
They are 2-2 on the tour, but Evans leads 3-2 overall, having won an ITF Final in Knoxville in 2015.
Their most recent meeting was in Miami this year, with Tiafoe rallying from a set down to win the Round of 64 contest.
Evans Eliminates Davidovich Fokina
World No. 26 Dan Evans ended a three-match losing streak with a straight sets win over Spain’s Alejandro Davidovich Fokina in the Round of 16 of the Stockholm Open on Wednesday.
Broken early in the first set, Evans fought back to draw level before eventually outlasting the Spaniard in the tiebreak.
With the first set in the bag, he took control of the second, racing to a 4-0 lead and then holding on for a 7-6 (7-5), 6-2 win in an hour and 39 minutes.
The 31-year-old Briton improved his season record to 23-21. He began the year by capturing the Melbourne-2 title but has been plagued by inconsistency since then. The result: This is just the fourth tour-level quarterfinal that he will be featuring in this year. Can he make it to the third semifinal?
Tiafoe Holds off Spirited Martinez
Two weeks ago he featured in the first final of the season, now Frances Tiafoe is inching closer to a second.
The World No. 41, who finished runner-up at the Vienna Open after falling to Alexander Zverev in the final, marched into the quarterfinals in Stockholm with a 6-4, 6-4 victory over Spain’s Pedro Martinez.
Tiafoe, who got a break in each set, staved off four break points in a six-deuce second game of the second set and then saved two more break points in the eighth game of the same set to hold off a spirited challenge from the World no. 62 in an hour and 32 minutes.
The 23-year-old American, playing in Stockholm for the first time, had begun his challenge with a 6-4, 7-6 (7-2) win over Sweden’s Elias Ymer.
With Wednesday’s win he is 31-23 for the season. Apart from his runner-up finish in the Austrian capital, he made it to the round of 16 at the U.S. Open and was a quarterfinalist in Delray Beach, Queen’s and Winston-Salem.
Evans v Tiafoe Prediction and Tip
While Evens is the fourth seed and also the higher ranked player, it’s Tiafoe who is in better form. Expect another cracking contest between the two with Tiafoe going through to the next round.
