Paul Continues Where He Left Off

Paul won his first senior title on the ATP tour at the end of last season in Stockholm, and picked up where he left off with an opening round victory in Adelaide, although he by no means had things all his own way in his opening match with Jiri Vesely of the Czech Republic, the world number 83.

He broke Vesely in the opening game of the match, and, although he immediately dropped his own serve, another break secured him the first set.

The second set was tightly contested and break points were few and far between, until the ninth game when Paul offered Vesely three chances, the third of which he took, enabling him to serve out to level the match.

Again, there was little to choose between the two men in the third set, although Vesely had to save three break points in the eighth game. However, serving to stay in the match, he gave the American a match point which was converted.

Daniel Upsets Italian Teenager

Daniel, the Japanese number three, came through qualifying to earn his place in the main draw against the Italian teenager, Lorenzo Musetti, the world number 59.

The Italian, after a promising first half of 2021 had seen personal problems a loss of form, and off the field issues, affect his performances in the second part of last season and Daniel ensured his 2022 started on a down note by pulling off a surprise win.

The tone was set in the opening game, when Musetti dropped his serve, and Daniel was able to consolidate that advantage to claim the first set.

The second set developed into a service battle and, with nothing to choose between them it went to a tie-break. Musetti was the first to falter, but he fought back and as able to take the match into a deciding set.

Again, serve dominated, but when the Italian offered up a break point, Daniel was able to convert it and then held serve next game to secure the victory.

Paul v Daniel Prediction and Tip

Although Daniel won their only previous encounter, that was more than four years ago, and Paul is a stronger player now than he was then. He should win this match to continue his winning run.
