David Goffin v Alex Molcan Head to Head

David Goffin and Alex Molcan are set to clash for the first time in their careers.

Goffin Marks His Return After Injury Absence

David Goffin has gone under the radar, partly due to his absence on a tennis court after an injury-riddled season on the ATP tour.

Goffin, a former World No. 7, has not played competitively since losing in the first round of the US Open to Mackenzie McDonald last August. He later announced that he was bothered by a debilitating knee issue for some time and called time to his 2021 season just days after that loss.

Goffin begins the new season on the back of a six-match winless run. His win-loss record of 14-15 in 2021 translates to about 48.3% – the lowest such return in his career since 2013. Aside from that, his ranking has taken a major hit.

The Belgian counterpuncher started in 2021 inside the world’s top 15. However, his second-half slump has seen him drop as low as No. 39 ahead of his first outing of 2022. And the big question is whether he has recovered fully to take part in the Australia summer swing.

Molcan Topples Seppi After Kyrgios Withdrawal

Alex Molcan was expected to take on Nick Kyrgios in what promised to be one of the most entertaining matches of the first round of the Melbourne Summer Set.

But the mercurial Australian was forced to withdraw from the tournament citing asthma, and not the knee injury he has recovered from last year. Kyrgios admitted he tested negative for the coronavirus and issued a statement that he was feeling unwell for four days.

Kyrgios’ replacement was the Italian qualifier Andreas Seppi who came close to defeating the fast-rising Slovak. Molcan needed two and half hours of play to dismiss the Italian. He won 72% first-serve points and manufactured as many as 14 breakpoints and converted five.

With a forehand that oozes perfection at times, the World No. 88 is a player that excites particularly when his game is firing on all cylinders.

Goffin v Molcan Prediction and Tip

We are not entirely sure about Goffins’s conditioning or how heavy-legged he could feel in his first match in three months. There is great value in backing the Belgian, but we are going with the games market.
