He lost the first set in a tough tiebreaker, then made a resounding comeback in the second to bagel his Dutch opponent Botic van de Zandschulp. But come the third set and Grigor Dimitrov was once again under pressure. The World No. 57 had taken a 3-5 lead and had a match point at 15-40 while serving for the match. With his back against the wall, Dimitrov brought out his A game and saved both the match points to stay in the contest.

He held serve in the next game to draw level at 5-5 and then won a nine-deuce game to seize the advantage. Van de Zandschulp got two breaking opportunities in the next game, but the World No. 28 saved both of them before converting his only match point for a 6-7 (5-7), 6-0, 7-5 victory in two hours and 45 minutes.

Dimitrov won 78% first serve points, saved three of five break points and converted six of 17. He also struck a total of 35 winners, five more than his opponent and and 11 fewer unforced errors than van de Zandschulp’s 37.

This was a second straight match when the Bulgarian had to rally from a set down. Against Argentina’s Facundo Bagnis in the second round, the third seed faltered in the first set but bounced back for a 5-7, 7-6 (7-3), 6-3 victory.

An eight time winner on the tour, Dimitrov hasn’t reached a final since 2018, but he made it to two semifinals last year, in San Diego in September and in Indian Wells in October.

Cressy Battles Past Munar

A day after saving two match points on his way to an epic three-set win over second seed Reilly Opelka, America’s Maxime Cressy knocked out Spain’s Jaume Munar in another sapping contest at the Melbourne Summer Set to reach the first ATP semifinal of his career.

Cressy, who battled for two hours and 41 minutes against Opelka, needed two hours and 26 minutes to beat the World No. 77, 7-6 (73), 6-4. The first set itself lasted an hour and 28 minutes.

Cressy, who struck 17 aces against Opelka, hit 11 against Munar. He also hit a total of 42 winners, exactly the double than his opponent. However, he made 12 more unforced errors than his opponent’s 10.

Ranked 112th in the world, the 24-year-old Cressy had qualified for the main draw by scoring straight sets wins over Portugal’s Joao Sousa and Italy’s Andrea Vavassori respectively in the qualifying rounds. He continued his good form in the main draw with a 6-3, 6-0 drubbing of Australia’s Rinky Hijikata in the first round.

It will be interesting to see if he is ready for another tough encounter.
