Liudmila Samsonova v Madison Keys Head to Head

Samsonova leads Keys by 1-0, defeating her on the grass courts in Berlin last year with 7-6(4), 2-6, 7-6(0). It was, by all means, a close match that could have very likely gone the other way.

Keys on a Roll

Madison Keys is on fire at the moment in Adelaide as she continues to make easy work of her opponents. After dispatching the number two seed Elina Svitolina with a near-clinical efficiency in the opener, she next produced a similar outcome against Tereza Martincova.

Needing just an hour, Keys won the match 6-1, 6-3, with a 75% first-service win rate and saving all four break points. But that’s not all – the American won an impressive 11 games consecutively to truly dominate the Czech.

The former world number seven, currently ranked 80 places below her best ranking, has an enviable pedigree spanning across 10 WTA finals – all of which were Premier tier or above. However, the 26-year-old had a muted campaign last year as she failed to win a singles title, let alone reach the latter rounds. Keys eventually ended the season with a tally of 11-15.

Nonetheless, she has the experience and ability to play some remarkable tennis, as she has done so often in the past. But in Samsonova, she is bound to find a formidable opponent.

Samsonova, Off to a Great Start

After a first-round exit in the Melbourne Summer Set 1 last week, Liudmila Samsonova has done well to bounce back from it here in Adelaide.

Starting as the number eight seed, the current World No. 39 has so far beaten Mayar Sherif and Nuria Párrizas Díaz in straight sets. In fact, her performance against Diaz was particularly impressive as she knocked out the Spaniard 6-2, 6-1, in 69 minutes. The Russian was never on the break and won an impressive 17 out of 20 points on her first serve.

Unlike Keys who struggled last year, Samsonova had a terrific time on the tour. She scaled new heights to reach the top 40 after starting the year outside of the top 100.

After a rather bleak start to the season, the 23-year-old found some heading in Miami where she reached the third round as a qualifier. A couple of months later, Samsonova won her maiden WTA title – again as a qualifier – in Berlin 500 after defeating Keys, Victoria Azarenka, and Belinda Bencic.

Towards the end of the year, she also reached the semifinal in Luxembourg and Courmayeur before helping Russia win the Billie Jean King Cup.

Samsonova v Keys Prediction and Tip

This is going to be a terrific match. Keys will start as the favourite owing to her overall pedigree and recent form but Samsonova has proven that she is capable of punching above her weight. If she manages to find some consistency in her game, she may very well carve the upset here.
