Badosa Knocks Out Tomljanovic

After faltering in the first round in Adelaide, Paula Badosa has found her winning touch in Sydney as she scored a second straight straight sets win on Wednesday to move into the quarterfinals of the tournament.

The fifth seed, who defeated Latvia’s Jelena Ostapenko  7-6 (7-1), 6-1 in the first round on Monday, needed an hour and 29 minutes to dispatch Australia’s Ajla Tomljanovic in the second round on Wednesday.

It was a tough contest as Tomljanovic broke the World No. 9 twice in the first set and thrice in the second but the Spaniard had a superior record while receiving as she converted 4 of 4 break points in the first set and capitalised on 4 of 9 breaking chances in the second.

One of the six players to break into the top 10 on the back of tremendous performances last season, Badosa claimed her maiden WTA 1000 title by defeating Victoria Azarenka in the final of the Indian Wells open last year. The 24-year-old Spaniard, who had never reached a WTA final before 2021,  also won the title in Belgrade.

Apart from those two titles, Badosa’s 43-17 season included maiden semifinal appearances at the WTA Finals and in Madrid and a Grand Slam quarterfinal debut at the French Open.

Bencic Rallies Past Dodin

World No. 23 Belinda Bencic fought back from a set down to overcome France’s Oceane Dodin in the Round of 16 on Thursday. The match, which started on Wednesday, was suspended due to rain last night and finished Thursday morning with the Swiss fighting back for a 2-6, 7-5, 6-3 victory.

Outplayed in the first set by Dodin, the Tokyo Olympic gold medalist found herself in more trouble in the second set when Dodin served for the match at 5-3. But the Swiss didn’t allow Dodin to run away with the match, she broke back and won four consecutive games to force the decider.

Bencic dominated the third with two breaks of serve and completed the win in two hours and 27 minutes.

Playing for the first time this season, Bencic had beaten Brazilian qualifier Beatriz Haddad Maia 6-3, 6-2 in the first round on Monday.

A solid hard court player, Bencic finished 27-12 last year on the surface and was 37-20 overall. Apart from her gold at the Olympics, she also reached the finals in Adelaide and the German Open (grass) but finished runner-up on both the occasions.

Badosa v Bencic Prediction and Tip

Badosa emerged victorious on both the occasions last year, winning on clay in Charleston and Madrid. She will look to extend that lead as they battle it out on hard court for the first time. The Spaniard should advance with a tough win.
