Badosa Keeps Perfect Record Against Bencic Intact

World No. 9 Paula Badosa remained perfect against Switzerland’s Belinda Bencic, as she beat her the third time in their three meetings on Thursday.

The win wasn’t served on a platter, as Bencic put up a brave fight. In the end the Badosa edged past the Swiss with a 7-6 (8-6), 3-6, 6-3 victory.

Badosa, who served 11 aces in the match, missed out on five set points in the first 12 games of the first set. She eventually closed out the set in a closely-fought tiebreak. Bencic, who had fought back from a set down to beat Oceane Dodin in the Round of 16 earlier in the day, looked on course for another come-from-behind win as she took the second set by breaking Badosa twice , while getting broken just once.

But Badosa spoiled Bencic’s comeback effort in the third, by going a break up and taking a 5-3 lead after both had exchanged breaks earlier in the set. Badosa held serve to close out the contest and move into the semifinals for the first time this season.

She had a torrid start, falling to Victoria Azarenka in the first round in Adelaide. Azarenka was the player she beat for her maiden WTA 1000 crown in Indian Wells last year.

However, Badosa was able to put the setback behind quickly, with straight set wins over Jelena Ostapenko and Ajla Tomljanovic in the first two rounds in Sydney.

Now, the 24-year-old will be aiming to reach a third career final on Friday but faces an opponent who has got off to a great start this year.

Kasatkina Knocks Out Muguruza

Daria Kasatkina stormed into a second semifinal in 2022 as she knocked out second seed and 2021 WTA Finals champion Garbine Muguruza in the quarterfinals on Thursday.

The unseeded Kasatkina didn’t face a break point in the first set, while she broke the Spaniard once to take a one-set-to-love lead.

Both players found it difficult to hold serve initially in the second set, which began with five consecutive break of serves. Kasatkina had the advantage, having broken thrice and she held on to that lead to score a 6-4, 6-4 win in an hour and 27 minutes.

With the win, the Russian improved to 6-1 in 2022. She had reached the semifinals in Adelaide by defeating Russia’s Anna Kalinskaya, America’s Madison Keys and Spain’s Nuria Parrizas-Diaz respectively, but was blown away by the United States’ Amanda Anisimova in the semifinals.

In Sydney, Kastakina breezed past the eighth seed Sofia Kenin in the first round and accounted for Elise Mertens in the next. She is yet to drop a set this week and will be hoping to keep it that way on Friday as she aims to reach a 10th career final.

A four-time winner on the tour, she reached four finals last year, winning two and finishing runner-up on two other occasions.

Badosa v Kasatkina Prediction and Tip

Both Badosa and Kastkina were impressive last season and both are quality hard court players. Although Badosa is higher ranked and the fifth seed she won’t take Kasatkina lightly and given the quality of players the Russian has beaten this week, it won’t be a surprise if she knocks out another seed en route the final.
