Jelena Ostapenko v Anna Katerina Schmiedlova Head to Head

The pair have played each other once before, in Cincinnati in August 2016, Ostapenko winning the match after a third set tie-break.

Ostapenko Looking to Build on Momentum of 2021

Ostapenko has never been able to replicate the success that saw her become the first Latvian to win a Grand Slam when she lifted the French Open title as a teenager in 2017.

However, after several years of struggles with form and the burden of expectations, last year she showed signs that she may be rediscovering her form again, winning her first title for four years on the grass of Eastbourne, and then finishing runner-up to the Danish teenager Clara Tauson at the Luxembourg Open in September.

Her record in Melbourne is mixed. Two years ago, she reached the quarter-finals of the doubles, whilst her best singles’ performance was back in 2018 when she got to the third round, although she lost her opening match last year.

This will be only her second match of the year, and she will be hoping for a better outcome than the first, which saw her lose in the first round in Sydney, beaten in straight sets by the world number 9, Paula Badosa.

Schmiedlova’s Purple Patch in the Distant Past

Schmiedlova enjoyed a purple patch back in 2015, winning three WTA finals and finishing runner -up in a fourth.

It is an indication of her decline since then that she has only reached one final since, and that was on Australian soil, when Sofia Kenin beat her in Hobart three years ago.

Her record at the Australian Open is modest – she has never been beyond the second round, the stage she reached last year.

There have been few indications that she is in the sort of form to improve on that this year.

At the Melbourne Summer Set event, she met Jasmine Paolini, and, although she took the Italian to three sets, she eventually lost.

She then had to battle though two rounds of qualifying to make the main draw in Sydney, only to suffer another first-round defeat, this time at the hands of Ajla Tomljanovic of Australia, beaten in straight sets.

Ostapenko v Schmiedlova Prediction and Tip

Neither woman has a particularly good record in Melbourne, but Ostapenko will see this a s a good opportunity to make a winning start and gain some confidence for the year ahead.

Tip: Ostapenko to win in straight sets: 8/11 (Click Here to Bet with bet365)
