Emma Raducanu v Sloane Stephens Head to Head

19-year-old Raducanu will meet Sloane Stephens for the first time in Tuesday’s much-anticipated first round at the Australian Open.

Can Raducanu Do The Double?

Emma Raducanu’s pursuit for a second Grand Slam title will begin in earnest when she takes on Sloane Stephens in one of the marquee matches the draw has thrown up at this year’s Australian Open. They always say history has a funny way of repeating itself, and we cannot rule out another unlikely triumph by the British No.1.

Raducanu’s Cinderella story at last year’s US Open will be talked about for many years to come. Some have hailed her triumph in New York as the greatest achievement in tennis history, and you can feasibly concur with that argument.

At 19, Raducanu is now in the spotlight. The media and fans are all going berserk at the prospect of Raducanu main-eventing a tennis tournament since winning her first Grand Slam title as a qualifier. And the sponsors have jumped the bandwagon, with Nike now putting adverts that feature Raducanu on their front cover.

But Raducanu’s preparation for the year’s first Grand Slam has not been devoid of drama. She was forced to pull out from the Abu Dhabi exhibition last month after testing positive for coronavirus. Her sole warm-up tournament was in Sydney where she was humbled by Elena Rybakina 6-0 6-1.

Stephens Set To Kick Off Season In Melbourne

Sloane Stephens will play her first match of the season at the Australian Open. With zero matches under her belt and limited match practice due to her wedding commitments on New Year’s day, it appears Stephens will be under the cosh to keep Raducanu at bay.

The American last played competitively on the WTA tour at Indian Wells in October. She was in the doldrums for much of last season, with her lowest point coming at the Italian Open.

Stephens needed to play qualifying matches to reach the main draw in Rome – the first time this has happened to her in almost nine years.

However, there is every chance the 28-year-old will find her feet Down Under in next to no time. Stephens famously advanced to the semifinals in 2013, upsetting the legendary Serena Williams en route. Back then, she was touted as the next big thing in women’s tennis. Although she won an odds-defying Grand Slam title in her career, Stephens may not have fulfilled her promise as a youngster.

Raducanu v Stephens Prediction and Tip

Raducanu is embarking on her first full season on the WTA tour and there is a cloud of uncertainty regarding her form next week. She might be feeling the ill-effects of Covid-19, and the fact that Stephens will be able to play loose makes her extremely dangerous.
