Jessica Pegula v Anhelina Kalinina Head to Head

Pegula and Kalinina have not played each at tour level before, but they have contested two matches on the ITF circuit. The Ukrainian won both matches on the clay courts.

Pegula Struggles In Singles

Jessica Pegula looked a shadow of the player that announced her arrival on the big stage in the past two warm-up tournaments for the Australian Open.

The American lost back-to-back first-round matches at the Melbourne Summer Set 2 and the Sydney International. But she managed to outpace her success in singles by winning the doubles title in Melbourne.

This marks the first time since 2019 that Pegula arrives at the Australian Open without a singles win. Historically, she has always fared well at the turn of the year. In 2020, she reached her second WTA final in Auckland, losing to Serena Williams, and last year she made the Round of 16 at the Yara Valley Classic.

Pegula memorably reached the quarterfinal during her last visit to Melbourne Park. It was a career-best result that unearthed her talent. Victories over the likes of Victoria Azarenka (two-time champion) and Elina Svitolina were some of her odds-beating and thrilling highs.

She will now look to replicate those exploits from last season as the number 21 seed.

Kalinina Far From Perfect

Anhelina Kalinina did not have things all her way in the build-up to the Australian Open. She went 1-2 in the two warm-up tournaments she played in, but you cannot fault her simply because of the tough draws she had to endure.

Kalinina drew Clara Tauson – the highly talented young Dane – who won their first-round bout at the Melbourne Summer Set in a tight two-setter.

And then she had to face World No. 38 Sorana Cirstearight out of the gate in Adelaide. Although she managed to take down the experienced Romanian, Kalinina was largely uninspiring in the defeat to Alison Riske in the subsequent round.

After three unsuccessful tries at the qualifying stages of the Australian Open, Kalinina will go straight into the main draw this time due to her high ranking. Sitting at No. 51 in the world owing to a breakthrough year on the WTA tour, Kalinina will have her eyes firmly on an upset.

Pegula v Kalinina Prediction and Tip

Pegula is vulnerable in the kind of form she is in, but not sufficient enough for me to lose faith in her. Expect the American to advance.
