Gael Monfils v Federico Coria Head to Head

Monfils won their only meeting at the U.S. Open last year.

Fitness Concerns for Monfils

He kicked off the season in emphatic fashion, winning his 11th career title and a first since Rotterdam in 2020. But days after triumphing at Adelaide-1, Monfils had to pull out of his Round of 16 match at Adelaide-2 after he injured his neck during the second set against Brazil’s Thiago Monteiro. Now the 35-year-old Frenchman will be hoping to recover quickly as he prepares to make a 17th main draw appearance at the Australian Open.

Ranked No. 19 in the world, Monfils delivered his best performance in Melbourne in 2016 reaching the quarterfinals. Last year, he made a first-round exit after losing to Finland’s Emil Ruusuvuori in a dramatic five-setter.

Known for his pace, athleticism and stunning shot-making ability, Monfils has been a showman over the years. But he had a torrid time last season, winning just three of his first 13 matches before picking up steam in the later half of the year.

Monfils finished the season with an 18-17 record, which included a runner-up finish in Sofia and a semifinal appearance in Metz.

He made a solid start in 2022, winning the Adelaide International title without dropping a set. Beginning with a win over Juan Manuel Cerundolo in the Round of 16, he defeated Tommy Paul in the quarterfinals, Thanasi Kokkinakis in the semifinals and Karen Khachanov in the final to pick his 10th hard court title. If he regains full fitness and continues playing the way he did in Adelaide, he would be a delight to watch and could make a deep run in Melbourne this year.

Little Expectations from Coria

World No. 64 Federico Coria will be in action for the first time since winning the Brasilia Challenger in November last year.

A clay-court specialist, the 29-year-old Argentine has very little experience of playing on hard courts. He has a 4-11 career record on the surface and was demolished by Milos Raonic on his Australian Open debut last year.

Coria is coming off a decent 2021 that saw him reach a maiden ATP final in Bastad, but he missed out on a first title after a straight sets loss to Casper Ruud.

He also featured in four Challenger finals, winning two of them.

Monfils v Coria Prediction and Tip

This should be a easy outing for Monfils. Coria clearly doesn’t prefer playing on hard courts and the Frenchman should make a short work of him in the opener.
