Nikoloz Basilashvili v Andy Murray Head to Head

Murray holds a 2-0 lead over Basilashvili. The Scot beat the Georgian in the first round at Wimbledon last year and again this past Wednesday in Sydney en route the final.

Basilashvili Searching For First Win in 2022

Ranked No. 23 in the world, Nikoloz Basilasvili had a great 2021 campaign, winning the titles in Qatar and Munich and reaching his first ATP 1000 final in Indian Wells.

Two of Basilashvili’s biggest wins in 2021 came against Roger Federer in Qatar and Stefanos Tsitsipas in Indian Wells, both in the quarterfinals.

Riding on the back of a 33-27 season, the Georgian will be hoping to continue churning out impressive performances this year. But the season hasn’t started all that well for the 29-year-old, who is yet to register his first win in 2022.

At the ATP Cup, Basilashvili lost to Diego Schwartzman in straight sets and retired from his match against Stefanos Tsitsipas after just five games in the match, with the Greek leading 4-1.

Basilashvili’s next assignment was Sydney International, where he was seeded second, but he suffered tough three-set defeat to Murray. The Georgian had taken the first set in the tiebreak, but Murray roared back in the contest for a 6-7, 7-6, 6-3 win.

Now Basilashvili will have revenge in his mind as he takes the court for his seventh Australian Open appearance on Tuesday. He has made the third round on two occasions in Melbourne, but is yet to go beyond the fourth round at Grand Slams and given the way he has started 2022 it seems unlikely he will enjoy a deep run this year.

Can Murray Build on Sydney Showing?

Andy Murray couldn’t end his title drought on Saturday, but he was still happy to have reached a 69th career final.

Murray, who faltered in the season opener in Melbourne, falling to Facundo Bagnis in the first round, had a terrific run in Sydney, brushing aside three seeded players on his way to the final. But a first title since his European Open triumph in 2019 remained elusive as he was outplayed by Aslan Karatsev in straight sets in the title clash.

The Scot had begun the tournament with a straight sets rout of Viktor Durasovic and then defeated the second seed Basilashvili in a come-from-behind win to reach the quarterfinal. Eighth seed David Goffin was his next victim, who withdrew after losing the first set 2-6. Murray continued his winning run in the semifinals, rebounding from a set down for a second time in the tournament to hold off second seed Reillly Opelka.

A three-time Grand Slam champion and two-time Olympic gold medallist, the former No. 1 was 15-14 last season, which included just two quarterfinal finishes in Stockholm and Metz.

Coming off a poor season, Murray will be delighted with the way he has started 2022 and a runner-up finish in Sydney will be huge confidence booster ahead of the Australian Open, where he was a finalist in 2010, 2011, 2013, 2015 and 2016. He is returning to the Melbourne major as a wild card after a gap of two years and will be hoping to start the tournament well.

Basilashvili v Murray Prediction and Tip

Basilashvili is the seeded player but Murray will have the psychological advantage. He is the form player and also far more experienced than the Georgian. So expect a close contest with Murray winning his first match at the Australian Open since 2017.
