Veronika Kudermetova v Claire Liu Head to Head

Kudermetova and Liu have no previous history. Their first-round match at the Australian Open will be their first head-to-head meeting.

Kudermetova Makes Another Final

Veronika Kudermetova made another strong start to the season for the second straight year, finishing runner-up to Simona Halep at the Melbourne Summer Set 1.

The power-hitting Russian also made a similar sort of introduction last season where she reached the championship match at the inaugural Abu Dhabi Open.

Kudermetova’s cause was slightly aided by Naomi Osaka’s withdrawal this time round in the semis when the Japanese star was unfit to take to the court.

However, she could not lay a glove on the face of Halep. She had tallied 22 aces en route to the final, but served zero aces in the title match, clearly illustrating the Romanian’s incredible defenses. The fact that Halep managed to neutralize Kudermemtova’s destructive weapon left the Russian without another tool to work with.

Kudermetova who is seeded at number 28 has a very difficult draw at this year’s Australian Open. She is projected to meet World No. 6 Maria Sakkari as early as the third round.

Liu Takes Confidence From Melbourne Warm-Up

Claire Liu will take some confidence to the Australian Open after scoring a big win over a top 50 player in Marta Kostyuk at the Melbourne Summer Set 2. Liu came from a set down to defeat Kostyuk who was playing in her first match of the year.

The California native is set to make her Australian Open main draw debut, which seems to have taken quite a while given her junior success. She is a former junior World No. 1 and won the Wimbledon girl’s title in 2017.

Last season, Liu made up over 100 places in the WTA rankings. After starting the year ranked 222 in the world, she would win 28 matches from 36 on the ITF circuit, taking home two titles.

The 21-year-old also made a first WTA semifinal in Chicago, losing to Emma Raducanu. She finished 2021 with a top 100 year-end ranking and gets direct entry at the year’s first Grand Slam.

Kudermetova v Liu Prediction and Tip

Liu will be defiant after scoring a very good win over Marta Kostyuk. But with all due respect to the Ukrainian, she is not at Kudermemtova’s level just yet. Expect the Russian to roll into Round 2.
