Giorgi opened her 2022 Australian Open Campaign with a straight-set 6-4 6-0 victory over Russian Anastasia Potapova. The 30-year-old was impressively not broken throughout the entire match, successfully winning 81% of points behind her first serve and saving 4/4 break point opportunities that Potapova manufactured.
From 4-4 in the first set Giorgi did not look back, winning the next 8 games in a row. The Italian was clinical, converting 100% of break point opportunities. In addition, winning 52% of return points, constantly putting Potapova under pressure. Crushing down 17 winners and winning 86% of points at the net, Giorgi powered her way past the Russian to see herself into round 2.
The Italian hits a big ball, and last year was able to clinch the biggest title of her career in Montreal. Her dream run included wins over Mertens, Kvitova, Gauff and Pegula. Giorgi dropped just one set on route to the final. The 30-year-old sealed the deal with a 6-3 7-5 win over Pliskova to live the trophy.
The 30th seed finds herself in the top quarter and a win against Martincova will set up a tie either Barty or Bronzetti in the 3rd round.

Martincova Coming off Davis Win
Martincova is already competing in her third tournament of the year, after playing Melboune Summer Set 1, where she lost in the opening round to Konjuh 6-4 6-4. Then, travelling to Adelaide, winning her opening match against Yastremska 6-4 3-6 6-3, before falling to eventual champion Keys in straight sets.
The Czech kicked off her 2022 Australian Open with a 7-5 6-2 victory over Lauren Davis. Teeing down 6 aces, plus an impressive 75% first serve percentage, Martincova made herself tough to break, especially as she saved 70% of break point opportunities Davis conjured up.
Hitting 25 winners and winning 51% of return points, the 27-year-old was no match for Davis, and secured her place in round 2 to set up a tie with Giorgi.

It is likely that this will be a close encounter, however, Giorgi is the slight favourite to book her place in the 3rd round due to her impressive ball striking, Martincova will likely hit a lot of forced errors.
