Maria Sakkari v Qinwen Zheng Head to Head

This will be their first meeting on the WTA Tour.

Sakkari Survives Tatjana Challenge

Maria Sakkari had a good opening match in the Australian Open as she battled the German veteran Tatjana Maria. In an hour and 47 minutes, the Greek took the match with 6-4, 7-6(2) with 28 winners and a 73% first-service win rate. That said, she committed 37 unforced errors compared to Maria’s 23.

In a way, it’s good that Sakkari was tested early in the tournament. She has a tricky bracket as she may have to play Naomi Osaka/Ash Barty as early as the quarterfinals.

Plus, Zheng is also making waves on the tour and the World No. 8 will need to put her best foot forward to reach the third round. Sakkari has had a mediocre start to the season, winning just a match in Adelaide before losing to Shelby Rogers in round two.

However, she had a good spell in 2021 and has much to build upon. The 26-year-old was a semifinalist in two Grand Slams, along with the year-end WTA Finals a3nd Miami Open. She was also a runner-up in the Ostrava Open.

Zheng, Ambitious and Dangerous

19-year-old Qinwen Zheng is a tennis prodigy in the making. She is also one of the potential dark horses in this year’s Aus Open.

She is the current World No. 108 – a massive year-on-year improvement from her 2020 year-end ranking of #287. Last season, Zheng worked relentlessly on the tour, competing mainly on the ITF circuit. She won three titles there and also reached the latter rounds in a few other events.

This season, she wants to aim bigger. In her own words, she wants to reach the top 30 by mid-2022. And by the looks of it, it is more than possible.

As a qualifier, Zheng reached the semifinal in Melbourne Summer Set 1, upsetting the likes of Vera Zvonareva, Ana Konjuh, and Bernarda Pera. She ultimately fell to Simona Halep but it did record her best WTA performance.

Here in the Slam, the Chinese once again started in the qualifiers and upset Coco Vandeweghe, Mai Hontama, and Seone Mendez to reach the main draw.

In the opener, she battled Aliaksandra Sasnovich for two hours and 22 minutes to take the match 6-3, 1-6, 7-6(10). It was a terrific display of resilience and grit as the teenager played some remarkable tennis to reach round two. Like Sakkari, she too committed 37 unforced errors but spread across three sets.

Sakkari v Zheng Prediction and Tip

Sakkari is the odds-on favourite here but Zheng is capable of producing the upset. This will be a great game of tennis, one that can go into three sets.
