Only Novak Djokovic has beaten Aslan Karatsev on Australian soil since the start of last season. And Karatsev ensured that would be the case heading into the second round of play at the Australian Open.
However, the Russian needed to withstand a barrage of aggressive hitting and an inspired Jaume Munar to progress. Twice Karatsev had to come back from a losing position, before winning 3-6 7-6 6-7 6-4 6-4.
The Russian was far from perfect and he was a shadow of the player that completely took everyone by surprise at last year’s Australian Open when he made the semifinals as a qualifier. Back then, he was on the fringes of the main tour and a virtually unknown player on the senior tour.
But since that breakthrough in Melbourne less than 12 months ago, he has earned a reputation as the ATP’s Most Improved Player last season.

McDonald Recovers To Defeat Milojevic
It was a rollercoaster day of emotions for American tennis. Coco Gauff’s unexpected exit at the hands of Wang Qiang was a line not expected on day one’s script of the Australian Open.
But still, 11 Americans managed to advance into the second round unscathed. And one of those is Mackenzie McDonald, who appeared under the cosh momentarily before beating Serbian qualifier Nikola Milojevic 5-7 6-4 6-3 6-2.
McDonald is defending fourth-round points following a fantastic run into the second week of a Grand Slam at last year’s edition. But he nearly made a melee of his first-round match against Milojevic who was playing in the main draw of a Major for just the second time at the age of 26.
The World No. 55 dropped the first set, but recovered to outpower the Serbian in the next three sets. He served the most aces (7-1), fired more winners, and surprisingly won more points at the net (29/36).
Karatsev v McDonald Prediction and Tip
Neither player looked particularly convincing nor comfortable in their opening matches. But on the balance of play, both deserved to win their respective first-round bouts. Karatsev is the man in form, and at 4/7 Moneyline, he looks slightly overpriced.
