Reilly Opelka v Dominik Koepfer Head to Head

The pair have played each other three times before, and Koepfer has won on each occasion. The first of those victories came in 2019 at the US Open, and there were two more last year – at the ATP Masters in Madrid, and at Wimbledon.

Opelka Too Strong for Anderson

Opelka’s first round opponent was Kevin Anderson, a former top five player and twice a Grand Slam finalist, but very much a player on the decline after several years of injury struggles.

And he proved too strong in the end for the South African, now ranked 97 in the world.

The tone was set when Opelka forced a break of serve in Anderson’s second service game, consolidating that lead to take the first set.

Then he broke Anderson again at the start of the second set, and was able to take the second set without his own serve coming under any pressure.

The third set was so dominated by serve that any return points against it were rare and neither man had a break opportunity.

But Anderson dropped his serve in the tie-break and then again and Opelka was able to wrap up the win.

Koepfer Needs Four Sets to Beat Spaniard

Koepfer is into the second round of Melbourne for the second successive year, but his opening round victory over the Spanish clay court player, Carlos Taberner, the world number 108, was not without its moments of difficulty.

The German started strongly with two early breaks and a third saw him take the first set for the loss of just one game.

However, the Spaniard responded with a break of his own early in the second, and then grabbed another as the match was levelled.

Koepfer, though, wrested back control of the match by breaking the Spaniard in the third game of the third set, and this time he did not let the advantage slip, breaking Taberner three times more in the fourth set to book his place in the next round.

Opelka v Koepfer Prediction and Tip

Opelka will be wary playing a man who has got such a good record against him but, if he plays to his potential, he should make the third round in Melbourne for the first time.
