World No. 51 Madison Keys of the U.S. knocked out compatriot and 2020 Australian Open champion Sofia Kenin in the first round on Monday. With the win Keys extended her unbeaten streak to six matches, having come into the tournament by winning the Adelaide-2 title with five wins in a row.
The 2017 U.S. Open runner-up, Keys served 15 aces and won 84% first serve points during her 7-6 (7-2), 7-5 victory in an hour and 31 minutes.
Neither player could break in the first set, thus needing a tiebreak, which Keys dominated. The second set, too, saw both players holding serve over the first eight games. But then a series of three consecutive breaks followed with Keys getting two of them. She held on to the lead and served out the match to advance to the next round for the eighth time in what is her ninth Australian Open appearance.
A 2015 Australian Open semifinalist and a 2018 quarterfinalist, Keys will is off to a 7-1 start in 2022 and she will be hoping to build on that.

Cristian Wins on Grand Slam Debut
World No. 69 Jaqueline Cristian, making her main draw debut at a Grand Slam event, defeated Belgium’s Greet Minnen on Monday to get her campaign off to a good start.
The 23-year-old Romanian, who reached her maiden WTA final at the Linz Open last year, had fallen 2-4 behind in the first set after conceding a break early. However, she came back with a double break to seal the first set.
The second set was even closer, as it witnessed as many as seven breaks of serves. Cristian had to make two comebacks in the set but eventually she clinched the match by breaking her opponent four times in the match to clinch a 7-5, 6-4 victory.
The Romanian, who had a 14-9 record in 2021, was 1-2 from two tournaments in 2022.
