Anett Kontaveit v Clara Tauson Head to Head

The pair have never played each other before. This will be the first match between the 26-year old Estonian, and the Dane, who is seven years younger.

Kontaveit Cruises into Second Round

Kontaveit has a decent record in Melbourne, having reached the quarter-finals here two years ago, and the fourth round in 2018.

And she made a strong start to her latest campaign with a convincing victory over the Czech doubles specialist, Katerina Siniakova, the world number 48.

The match began with both women saving break points in their opening service games, and it was Siniakova who made the first breakthrough, only to be immediately broken in turn. Two more breaks followed as the Estonian took control of the proceedings.

The Czech gave herself hope with an early break in the second set, but, yet again, could not hold on to her advantage and immediately dropped her serve again.

She had break points in the next Kontaveit game, could not convert them and was made to pay as she was broken once more. The number six seed served out from there.

Tauson Makes Confident Melbourne Debut

Tauson was one of the clutch of teenagers, along with Emma Radecanu and Leylah-Annie Fernandez, that burst on to the women’s tennis scene in 2021.

This is her first time in the main draw in Melbourne, but, if she was overawed at the prospect of that or having to play local woman, Astra Sharma, the world number 97, in front of her home crowd, she barely showed it in their first round match.

The first set was dominated by serve and there were only two break point opportunities, both of them falling to Tauson, the second of which she was able to convert and then served out.

Another break put her in control of the second set, but then for the first time, the Dane showed a touch of nerves and she allowed the Australian to break back.

She then had to save three more break points, but, having weathered that storm, broke the Australian once more.

Sharma saved one match point on her own serve, but could not prevent Tauson sealing the match next game.

Kontaveit v Tauson Prediction and Tip

Kontaveit has all the experience on her side and will start the favourite, but will need to be wary of the challenge of the teenager who has nothing to lose.
