Inglis Stuns U.S. Open Runner Up

Australian wild card Maddison Inglis pulled off a huge upset in the first round, taking out 2021 U.S. Open runner-up Leylah Fernandez on Tuesday.

In a dominating performance, Inglis saved all three of the break points that she faced in the match while breaking her opponent once in the first set and twice in the second to clinch her first win at a Grand Slam. The World No. 133 needed just an hour and 23 minutes to dispatch the 23rd seed 6-4, 6-2.

This was Inglis’ second main draw win of the season. She had won her first round match at Adelaide-2 against Danka Kovinić, before being outplayed by Tamara Zidanšek in the second round.

The 24-year-old Australian had begun her season at Adelaide-1, winning both the qualifiers with ease but was beaten in straight sets by Shelby Rogers.

On Tuesday, Inglis won 73% of her first serve points. She struck 14 winners, six more than her opponent and made 27 unforced errors, three fewer than the Canadian.

Inglis was particularly dominant in the second set, racing to a 4-0 lead. Fernandez had a couple of break point opportunities with Inglis serving at 4-1 and also had a break point chance with the Aussie serving at 5-2, but Inglis was able to save all the break points and eventually converted a third match point to sail into the second round.

Baptiste Rallies Past Garcia

Hailey Baptiste knocked out World No. 70 Caroline Garcia of France on Tuesday to reach the second round of the Australian Open on her debut.

Ranked 165th in the world, the American qualifier lost the first set and was broken early in the second. She faced elimination as Garcia served for the match at 4-5, but the 20-year-old broke back, forcing the tiebreak. She dominated the tiebreak, taking a 6-0 lead before Garcia won four points in a row, but eventually the American thwarted the Frenchwoman’s comeback bid and sent the match to the third set.

Baptista started the third well, taking a 4-0 lead, before Garcia got a break back. Baptiste, however, had a third break in the set to win the match 4-6, 7-6 (7-4), 6-3 in two hours and seven minutes.

Baptiste also had to deal with two three-setters in the qualifying rounds, beating Britain’s Samantha Murray Sharan and China’s Yue Yuan in three in the first and third qualifying rounds. The only easy outing she had was against Nina Stojanović in the second qualifying round, winning in straight sets.

This is Baptiste’s first main draw appearance this year.

Inglis v Baptiste Prediction and Tip
