Sabalenka Rallies to First Win of Season

The second seed had a difficult start to her campaign as she had to rally from a set down to beat Australia’s Storm Sanders in the first round on Monday.

Sabalenka lost her first three service games in the match, but also broke her opponent twice before winning her first service game in the seventh game of the first set. The Belarusian broke a third time later in the set to draw level at 5-5, but immediately conceded her next service game. Sanders held serve in the next game to seal the first set in 48 minutes.

Pressure mounted on World No. 2 in the second set as the Australian wild card broke early and took a 1-3 lead. Sabalenka wasn’t ready to go down though as embarked on a road to recovery, winning the next five games and forcing the decider. It was one-way traffic in the final set with Sabalenka dictating terms. She broke Sanders twice on her way to a 5-7, 6-3, 6-2 win over the World No. 128.

A semifinalist at the Wimbledon and the U.S. Open last year, Sabalenka also produced her best result at the Australian Open last year, reaching the fourth round of the tournament. The 23-year-old has had a shocking start to the season. She went down to World No. 100 Kaja Juvan in her opening match at Adelaide-1 and then fell to World No. 93 Rebecca Peterson in the first round of Adelaide-2. It was her serve that brought her downfall in both those matches.

She had 18 double faults against Juvan and 21 against Peterson. On Tuesday, against Sanders, she once again struggled with her serve, double faulting 12 times in the match. If she hopes to extend her stay in Melbourne she will have to fix her serve quickly else an early exit stares at her.

Wang Dispatches Li

Wold No. 100 Wang Xinyu notched her first win at a Grand Slam as she upset the more fancied Ann Li in the first round on Tuesday.

Wang won a tough first set in the tiebreak and then sent the World no. 56 packing with a strong showing in the second to clinch a 7-6 (7-5), 6-3 victory.

The Chinese player had 10 break point chances in the match and she converted three of them. Li, meanwhile, had five chances to break Wang’s serve but she could convert just two of them.

Wang didn’t have a great start to the season, winning just one of her qualifying rounds in Melbourne and falling to Harriett Dart in the second qualifying round. She however made it to the main draw as lucky loser, but was beaten by Aliaksandra Sasnovich in straight sets.

Last year, the 20-year-old Wang had an impressive season, reaching the semifinals in Prague and back-to-back quarterfinals in Courmayeur and Linz. She also had a runner-up finish at a WTA 125 event in Columbus.

Sabalenka v Wang Prediction and Tip

Wang can be a dangerous player and although Sabalenka returned to winning ways on Tuesday, she was far from convincing. The second seed will still be favoured to win this contest but it may take another huge effort from her to keep her chances alive in the tournament.
