Vondrousova Makes a Quick Start

Tokyo Olympics silver medallist Marketa Vondrousova made a solid start to her 2022 Australian Open campaign, beating local hope Priscilla Hon in straight sets on Tuesday.

The 22-year-old Czech faced little resistance in the first set, dropping just six points on her serve and breaking her opponent twice to clinch the set in less than 30 minutes. Hon was the first to break in the second set, taking a 1-3 lead, but Vondrousova came back well, winning the next five games, which included three breaks of serve, and taking the contest 6-2, 6-3.

Ranked No. 41 in the world, Vondrousova had beaten Viktorija Golubic and lost to Ana Konjuh in the warm-up event in Adelaide leading to the Australian Open.

The 2019 French Open finalist is making her fifth appearance in the tournament. She delivered her best result last year, reaching the fourth round in Melbourne.

In her first round match on Tuesday, the 31st seed Vondrouosva struck 13 winners and made just 17 unforced errors. Her opponent meanwhile, had 18 winners and 35 unforced errors in the match.

Samsonova Knocks Out Qualifier

World No. 37 Liudmila Samsonova advanced to the second round of the Australian Open for the second straight year after she knocked out American qualifier Emina Bektas in the first round on Tuesday.

The Russian had a poor start with Bektas breaking early and going up 0-3 in the first set. She however recovered quickly, getting the break back in the fifth game and then seizing the advantage by breaking again later in the set. She eventually wrapped up the set in 42 minutes.

Samsonova saved four break points in the sixth game of the second to stay on serve and then converted her break point opportunity in the next game to take control of the proceedings. Bektas failed to comeback and Samsonova advanced with a 7-5, 6-4 victory.

One of the areas of concern for the Russian was her serve. She got just 53% of her first serves right and had five double faults in the match an area she would like to improve on in the next round

Samsonova, who made a first round exit from Melbourne-1 event to kickstart the season, reached the quarterfinals in Adelaide-2.

Vondrousova v Samsonova Prediction and Tip

Samsonova beat Vondrousova en route the Berlin title last year and so the Czech will look to avenge that defeat. She is the seeded player and more experienced at this level. Expect Vondrousova to advance after a hard-fought three-setter.
