Matteo Berrettini v Carlos Alcaraz Head to Head

The pair have played each other once before, on the indoor hard courts of Vienna last year, Alcaraz winning their quarter-final in three sets.

Berrettini Battling HIs Way Through

In contrast to his opponent, last year’s Wimbledon finalist Berrettini has had to work a lot harder to make the third round.’

He began by beating Brandon Nakashima of the USA, the world number 68, like Alcaraz  a NextGen finalist from last November, but had to come from behind, dropping the first set and needing a tie-beak to move ahead in the third, before finally taking control of the match.

Stefan Kozlov of America, the world number 169, the man he faced on Wednesday, appeared to present little danger on paper, and, when the Italian breezed through the first set for the loss of just one game, all seemed to be plain sailing.

It was, therefore, something of an unpleasant surprise when Kozlov not only earned break points against him in the second set but forced him to drop his serve for the only break of the second set.

And, with the third set dominated by serve, Berrettini needed all his experience to take the one break opportunity that was offered to move ahead once more.

It was only in the fourth set that he was able to show his class, securing an early break and then consolidating that with another to finally see off the American.

Alcaraz Enjoying Life in Melbourne

Still just 18, and playing in only his second Australian Open, the NextGen reigning champion Alcaraz appears to be enjoying life in Australia.

Having brushed aside the challenge of the qualifier from Chile, Alejandro Tabilo, in straight sets in the first round, he faced  a much more experienced opponent in the form of Dusan Lajovic of Serbia, in the second round on Wednesday.

However, despite the fact that there are only eight places between their comparative rankings, on this evidence there is a gulf between them.

The young Spaniard seized the advantage with an early break in the first set, and then took the set with another break.

In the second set he continued his dominance, two more breaks enabling him to extend his lead.

Belatedly, Lajovic found some form in the third set and, for the only time in the match, the Alcaraz serve came under pressure and he was broken. However, the Serb immediately dropped his serve again, and, from that point on, the match was as good as over. Just to make sure though, Alcaraz broke him again and served out next game.

Berrettini v Alcaraz Prediction and Tip

This is not a match that Berrettini is likely to be looking forward to with any relish, against one of the rising stars of the sport, and who already seems at home on Melbourne. This may go to five sets, but it would not be a big surprise if Alcaraz were to win it.
