Daria Kasatkina v Magda Linette Head to Head
At the moment, it is Linette who leads her Russian adversary by 2-1. They met twice last season; Kasatkina won the quarterfinal match in San Jose while Linette bagged the same round in Cleveland.
Kasatkina, Continuing her Resurgence
Former World No. 10 Daria Kasatkina is slowly fighting her way to be with the elites after being out of the scene for the last couple of seasons.
The 24-year-old Russian enjoyed a good spell in 2021 by reaching four WTA singles finals (winning the title in two of them). With that, she also climbed her way into the top 25 after starting the season as #72.
So far this year, Kasatkina has pretty much picked up right where she left. She prepared for the Australian Open with back to back semifinal appearances in Melbourne Set 2 and Sydney Classic.
In the main draw of the Slam, the number 25 seed faced the Swiss qualifier Stefanie Vogele and knocked her out 6-3, 6-1. Kasatkina hardly faced any difficulties as she won the match with a 76% first serve win rate. This kind of performance is hardly new for her; she is quite good at the game and when in form, she is a notorious opponent to stop.
Linette Defeats Sevastova
World No. 53 Magda Linette moved past Latvia’s Anastasija Sevastova in the first round with 6-4, 7-5.
That game also marked her first win of the season; the Pole last played in Adelaide 2 where she was beaten by Alison Riske in the opening match. Linette will now hope to achieve something that she has done only once in Melbourne – reach the third round.
This is certainly a tall order to deliver but not an impossible one. The 29-year-old did have a few moments of brilliance last season when she reached the semis in Cleveland and Strasbourg. That said, consistency has never been her strong suit and Linette did lose in the early rounds in the rest of the tournaments.
She does have an intriguing history in Grand Slams. In Wimbledon last season, she defeated Elina Svitolina in the second round. Similarly, in the French Open, Linette got fortunate against Ashleigh Barty when the Aussie withdrew in set two of their round of 64 match.
Can she pull something like this against Kasatkina too?
Kasatkina v Linette Prediction and Tip
Expect Kasatkina to win this one. She is in a brilliant form and while she may have stammered against Linette in the past, it is unlikely this time around.
