Kadhe Looking to Upset Sousa

The 28-year-old will compete in his first match of the year on Tuesday in front of home supporters against a former top-30 player. The Indian will be looking to score an upset Sousa and reach the next round.

In 2021, Kadhe recorded 9 wins and 13 losses on the challenger circuit, with 5 of these wins coming on hard courts. Last March, Kadhe competed in the M15 Pune challenger, which sparked his best performance of the year, reaching the quarter-finals. His run to the last-8 included victories over Dev and Palan, before losing to Crawford 6-3 7-6(5). This year, the 28-year-old has an opportunity to compete in the ATP event.

This is a great opportunity to test himself against a top player in the shape of Joao Sousa. A surprise victory for the Indian would secure an encounter with the 3rd seed Mager in the next round.

Sousa Favourite to Advance to Round Two

Joao Sousa was fortunate enough to get a lucky loser spot at this year’s Australian Open, drawing against eventual quarter-finalist Sinner. The Italian got the better of Sousa in straight sets 6-4 7-5 6-1. Preceding this, Sousa won his Q1 and Q2 rounds against Guinard and Polmans, before losing 6-4 6-4 to Albot in the final round of qualifying.

Most recently, Sousa competed in the Quimper Challenger where he reached the quarter-finals of the event. In the opening two rounds, Sousa defeated Agamenone and Lestienne, before falling short 6-3 7-6(6) to Denis Novak.

Formerly ranked 28th in May 2016, the 32-year-old appears to still be far away from his best tennis. In 2021, Sousa only managed to surpass the 1st round in an ATP event once, which occurred in Miami where he narrowly scraped through against Connell 7-6(6) 6-7(8) 7-5. Aside from this, Sousa suffered 11 opening round defeats in ATP main draws, making 2021 a season to forget.

Kadhe v Sousa Prediction and Tip

This is a great opportunity for Kadhe to compete against a player ranked much higher than him. He has no expectations and has nothing to lose so should just enjoy the occasion and swing freely. Despite this, Sousa’s ability will likely be too much for his opponent to handle and Sousa will likely be victorious and set up a tie with the 3rd seed.
